Bashing Taurus

You know, over at the Colt forum, they look at S&W the same way some people here look at Taurus!

Nooooo......there is a lot of mutual respect between Colts & Smith and Wessons. But, they view Taurus' the same way people here look at Taurus.

In fact go to any of the other gun forums and you will see the same opinions about Taurus....ie.. they have poor quality control & are not well made, just a cheap price that causes some people to like them.

"The Taurus shoots okay, but the cylinder pin would unscrew and jam the cylinder. I fixed that and now the hammer sometimes locks up. Reliable? Absolutely not."

I had the same problem but it was with a S & W model 18.

I have had probably well over 200 handguns over the years. From Mauser 96's to a matched set of Pythons==the vast majority have been Colts, Smiths and Rugers.

I have had two Tauri==one was a model 85 CH that constantly locked up in DA. The other was (is) a Raging Bull in 454. No problems with the .454. Also have a Charter 44 spl that's given me no problems (another supposed "lemon").

Maybe I'm just lucky(?)

The first revolver I bought new in the box was a Taurus 669. I still have it and love it, not as smooth as my M13-2, but I would still trust my life with it, and to me, thats all that matters.

just a cheap price that causes some people to like them.

or not like them, face it, some people wont buy something if it isnt the most expensive on the market. I put 5000 rounds through a hi-point c9 with no problems. ive got a remington 522 viper that never gave me problems, still shooting it every weekend. We here about all these Cheap "lemon" guns and automatically hate them. I hate to say it but S&W customer service has went down the drain as of late as well. The 15-22 IMO shoudl have been recalled but never was, the first buyers were guinea pigs and now basically either sent their guns in to be fixed or sold them. There are problems with all gun manufacturers, not just the "cheap ones"

If ya go to the grocery store, to the meat section, you can get shoulder or rump cut beef for a lot less than filet mignon........if you go to the gun store, there's Taurus, Hi-Point, Glock, S&W, Ruger etc. Not everyone wants or needs to pay for the "premium" cuts, when all you want is something to do the job. That's what the gun market is all about, and it's what a free market economy is about. We let Taurus import their guns even though there is a solid US based gun production market.

Like was said above, "cheap" products help keep the "high end" makers on their toes. S&W can't jack up prices too much or else buyers will go to the lower cost stuff. Ruger comes in with solid, no frills firearms, which keeps S&W from pricing stuff too high. If S&W was the only gunmaker in the US, we would be paying $1,000 for an M&P pistol and $1,500 for a 686+.

Taurus Handguns come with a life time warrenty. Enough said.

Jimmy, talk to a few people who have tried to use that warranty, then they had to send it back again and again because it just won't work correctly. That "life time warranty" doesn't look so good after that. I've known a couple people who have given up after being driven to dumping the gun just to be rid of it and read of others with the same kind of experience.

Now, of course not all Taurus guns are defective, and they produce very attractive and diversified guns. Some of their .38s and .44s, for example, have proven to be worth the money, until you have the misfortune of dealing with their phone reps and then learning that you have to pay the shipping costs (as many times as necessary) for the "free" repair.

I'm thinking that those 22 revolvers were probably sent in because of "issues" so 18 of 22 might not seem so bad. If I had a revolver that was running perfect I wouldn't want to do anything to it.

My '82 vintage 669 was my first wheelgun. It isn't as refined as my S&W but I didn't get any of my S&W for $300 OTD. ;)

Not so, RobertJ. I am a member of the Colt Forum. There generally is mutual respect there, and some good natured kidding.
Of course, they don't know what grips are; they call 'em stocks or some such, and their cylinders turn the wrong way! What's more, their four-inch .22 Diamondbacks can't shoot straight, like a S&W 17 can ;-)

I know, I know, I was just having some fun! But it is sort of the impression one gets when reading some of the posts over there.

I wouldn't buy a new Taurus, but then I wouldn't buy a new S&W either. And just like S&W, Taurus actually did make some nice firearms at one time. From the ones I've seen, older Taurus' can be very nice and can give even the older S&Ws a run for their money.

For anyone not familiar with their insides, they are not exactly like a S&W and have gone through their own changes over the years.

Is there a Taurus forum I can move this to?
:D

You could dig around in your bag of tricks and find the buttons to open up one right here. Call it the Off Brands Section :p

Taurus, Charter, Ruger, SIG, Glock, Kill-Tick.........wait a minute; I'm talking about some of my own guns :o

This is not a bad idea. Not a criticism thread but someplace to discuss the other guns. I only own three S&W's but I have a bunch of other stuff.

If they are so bad, why did it take y'all seven of them to figure it out? I am just curious.....

It's not IF they are so bad, they are bad. Period.

Several different models of revolver, pistol, and rifles. All bought new. All broke. Three of them with less than 100 rounds.

I gave them an honest try and they honestly failed me.

Sorry, but never again.
