My youngest daughter, her boyfriend my sister in law and her daughter went to see the new Harry Potter movie tonight. I dropped them off and thought I might stick around if there was any good movies showing. None were a lot of stupid comedies was all that was there. the best choice I could see was the new winnie the pooh movie.

Racine used to have 6 theaters when I was growing up plus a drive in so we always had a good selection, now we have a multiplex that plays stuff on 8 screens.

No good movies so I sat in the sun and read a book.

I'm with you. I hate to go into a theater for the $8 matinee and don't do it unless I am forced to. The last time I went was a couple of years ago when I had the grandkids for a week. We saw "Up" and I was surprised how good it was.

Most of the "new" movies I see are when I give platelets. I am stuck to the machine for a couple of hours and they have movies to watch. I let the guy who works the machine pick me a movie and he does OK. Last time he got me "The Book of Eli," I had never heard of it but loved it.

I also liked the Book of Eli

There haven't been any excellent films in quite some time--it's more about special effects than a good story delivered by good acting.

Having said that, my kids like movies.
I make sure we go the brewhouse theater to see a movie I can tolerate (or want)
They give student discounts, and no one under 18 is admitted without a parent, texters and phone users are ejected from the theater, and they bring me beer.

I tend to agree with most of you so far. I haven't been to a movie theater is several years. I saw Master and Commander when it came out and that was the first one in about 6 or 7 years.

Just not worth spending the money to see most of them, not to mention the folks who talk on their cells during the movie.

I buy a lot of movies from Ebay and Amazon, rarely anything new (except the new True Grit) and generally buy the used ones for about 4-6 dollars.

We have cable and see some there, and there are two free MOD channels which let me see older movies free. HBO and Showtime MOD really don't have much I care to see.

I watched a 1951 Zane Grey tonight, Riders of the Purple Sage on one MOD and really enjoyed it. We watched To Catch A King last night, a movie I got from Amazon for $4.97.

Recently saw Super 8. I, my wife and BIL/SIL all enjoyed it. But I have to admit the pickin's are slim.

I haven't enjoyed anything those Hollywierdos have put out since "The Great Train Robbery".

Last movie I went to in a theater was Fargo - what was that 1996? Lets see...I can go to the crowded sticky floor theater and pay $50 for two people, to see a movie popcorn with a diet soda, or sit in my chair at home with the popcorn and soda for about $3 - not a difficult choice for me.

If it's not on Dish, Netflix or any of the packaged cable channels I don't see it - so far I'm not thinking I'm missing very much. Did watch Secretariat off Netflix instant movies last night and found that one interesting. $7.99 a month all the movies you want to watch.

I can hardly remember the last time I went to the theater. I think it was to see "No Country for Old Men". That's been a while...

Last movie I went to was when I took my sons to see the first Star Wars. Cant even remember the year but it was a long time agto.

Last movie I went to see was "Sudden Impact". Went when it first came out. Whenever that was......No cell phones back then. Prob about 4 or 6 dollars to get in

We went to see The Great Locomotive Chase starring Buster Keaton last year when it ran at the Fox in Atlanta. I missed getting tickets to Gone With The Wind. :(

I will admit the only good movie to come out in years was True Grit, and it had a bit to be desired- but I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the new Thor movie. I read the comic years ago and it was fun seeing all the characters larger than life on the big screen. But since I read waaaay too many comics as a kid I tend to go see most of the superhero movies. They are half good and half bad. The new Incredible Hulk was miles better than The Hulk was... I have enjoyed the new Batman movies. I didn't care for the dead beat dad aspect of the new Superman movie. The new Spiderman movies were ok but each one drifted more after the first. I still need to see the new Green Lantern movie. I may enjoy them more since I don't expect them to be Oscar performance movies. I just expect them to have some fun special effects and some decent action.

A lot of us would like to enjoy trying to recreate the old experience of going to the theater to see a good movie, but it's getting harder and harder to do.

Prices are ridiculous, the general public anymore isn't fit to be around in such a setting and the fare offered by the whiz kids in Hollyweird is aimed more and more at the mentally deranged and morally bankrupt.

And like most other things these days technology is totally changing the availability of what is seen in the theaters. They don't want to turn loose of the mega-bucks they gouge for in the theater but if one does the online movie thing it's peanuts and you don't have to wait long to see most anything that come out. They've made it so cheap that it doesn't make sense, since it would seem to be killing the true "box office" receipts.

I'm sorry, but paying $6 to $8 for 30 cents worth of popcorn just for the privilege of eating it in their theater ? They can have it . . . .

I have to dis-agree. I think there are some truly excellent movies now. Watched "Robin Hood" recently, the one with Russel Crowe. IMHO, the best telling of that story yet. For story & special effects, "Avatar" can't be beat. Maybe my all-time favorite movie is pretty recent, King Arthur". Yes, "The Book of Eli" was pretty good, too. There are some great movies available now, you just have to ignore the mostly main-stream drivel, as it's aimed at a much younger audience than most of us are. I have on-demand with my cable movie package, & I can usually find at least a half dozen good movies to watch about any time I want.
