Just for a new topic of discussion.

I was at the range with an older family friend the other day who is very experienced with firearms. I actually bought my 15-22 from him before he even fired ( he said that is one of the few mistakes hes made with a firearm).

He was asking me how I liked the rifle, and of course I just gushed about it. But he did ask me what I would like S&W to change/add to the 15-22 series and this was my answer:
" I would like to test a .22WMR variant of this rifle. Maybe be able to purchase an entire upper assembly to switch from .22lr to .22wmr. I would like the option to have 16.25 in or an 18in barrel length for the rifle with the ability to accesorize as we do now."

I am definitely dreaming. But I thought that it might be a sweet little rifle that has additional hunting capabilities (ex.coyotes).

a 22Mag version would be awesome, i agree, not needed, but would be cool to see. I probably wouldnt own both, but if I was buying new between the 2, it would be tough You cant blow through Ammo with 22Mag like you can 22LR without starting to worry a little about cost.

This would be pretty cool, however unless OOB discharges are eliminated from the design, OOBs with this round would be even more scary. I would want a solution to that before the caliber got any bigger.

I'd personally like to see this rifle chambered for .17HMR.

You brought up something I failed to ask. What other modifications would the rest of the 15-22 owners like to see whether in caliber, barrel length etc...? I think I would be interested in the .17HMR as well...

The OOB would definitely need to be fixed before that. I like my hand more than my rifle...

Even the trusty Remington 597 succumbed to blowups with 17 HMR. Imagine the results with a 15-22 in this caliber.

i think the 22 WMR or 17 HMR variations could be pretty sweet if the engineering bugs were worked out--but damn would they be expensive to shoot as much as i shoot the .22LRs LOL

is anyone producing semi auto rifles using .17hmr or .22wmr at all? from what i read it says right on them they aren't safe for semi auto use.

I think at least one manufacturer is selling a semi-auto 17 HMR. I saw an ad for it in a gun rag but I forget the name. Even if they are making the rifle though, as far as I know, CCI still has their safety warning out against using their 17 HMR ammunition in semi-autos. This is a potential liability issue that I wouldn't want to touch with a 10' pole if I were CCI or a gun maker.

What about .204 ruger? They are pretty popular hunting wise.

???

That is a centerfire cartridge.

Yeah, shoulda been more specific in my post. .204 would have to be better than .17HMR and .22WMR due to the concerns that were brought up. I But it is still different than .223 or .308.

Im probably stretching the topic a little too far.

204 Ruger is a high-pressure, centerfire rifle cartridge. There is no comparison between it and the rimfire cartridges that the 15-22 design would be capable of firing....

I was actually looking for a .22WMR or .17HMR in a tactical rifle before I bought my M&P 15-22, all I could find was this:

Kel-Tec Carbine RMR30, 22 WMR, 16.1 in, Adjustable Stock, Black Finish, 30 Rd

.22WMR or .17HMR would be sweet!

I was checking them out, but I just couldn't talk myself into it. The only thing Im hung up on is the barrel. There is a whole lot of nothin' on the end of the rifle. It just looks like a pistol with an extended barrel to be a rifle. With that being said, I would still buy it to just blow some stuff away...

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Can't we just thread the barrel end and put a flash suppressor on it?

The 15-22 design in .22WMR would also have to have the same upgrades that the .204 ruger would because of how different the ammunition is from .22LR.

maybe if it's legal in your state. if there was an option for a factory welded one which would be legal i'd buy it.

I'm in Cali, rimfire rifles in CA don't follow the same rules as centerfire rifles, like the MOE, it's legal in CA as long as you get the 10 round magazine.

Im good in my State on pretty much everything...Minus fun.

Maybe if we could get Belt Fed to produce us some items for this rifle like a barrel shroud to make the end not so hideous, I'd buy it now.

I wonder if Tacticool22 would want to manufacture some accessories too?
