I'm thinking:

1) Find a silver Registered Magnum
2) Cut the barrel to 3 1/2"
3) Add pearl grips

:D

But seriously... I'm thinking I might find a 3 1/2" nickel pre-27, and add some ivory or faux ivory grips. Does anyone have an idea as to who makes grips that would be a good match?

"ivory" grips

Eagle Grips make their "Sledgehammer" which is a target-style synthetic ivory grip. It's available in N frame square butt, and could probably be carved.

PATTON REVOLVER IVORY GRIPS

Bob Lescovec in PA does excellent work. He has done beautiful repair to two or three sets of ivory grips for me. He can also carve the grips if you want a design or scrimshaw done. His phone is 724-449-8360. You will find he is a talented gentleman.

Ahem! Quoting the great General: "Only New Orleans pimps carry guns with pearl grips. Mine are IVORY!".

His grips are ivory with GSP inlayed into them and the gun has some of the nicest engraving I've ever seen!

Can you get new-production ivory grips today? I thought you couldn't import ivory today... You did say repair so you might have been referring to older grips. I am not sure what the laws are or what the availability of ivory is.

Pre ban elephant ivory grips are still available. Nut Meg makes them as well as several other firms, just google. Figure about $350 minimum, that's the least expensive I've been able to buy them.

Since I just picked up a blued 3 1/2" Model 27-2 I teamed it up with my engraved Colt .45 so I can pretend I'm General Patton. I sure can't afford the ivories so these stags have to do. Here's Patton's outfit and my two guns below. I think an actual Patton rig with perfectly duplicated guns would be a great venture for the well heeled Patton admirer.

Wyatt, those are pretty sweet. I thought stag grips might be a close approximation to ivory if I decided not to shell out the $$ for ivory.

I have shown this gun before but hope this helps. I got these grips from Don Collins. These are Corin and the fit and finish are superb. Much nicer then any of those bonded Ivory's and plastics MPO. Their suppose to age like Ivory also. Higher quality, higher price. But nowhere near the price of Ivory..

Pearl grips??? To quote General Patton when asked by a reporter about the stocks on his registered magnum: "Only a pimp in a cheap New Orleans whore house would have a gun with pearl grips." "These are ivory." His registered magnum was blued not nickel plated.

Many years ago my very close old friend and mentor Ura "Duke" Duvall, a heavy S&W collector, had either a registered mag, or pre war 357. Blue 3 1/2" with carved ivory grips. On the sideplate it also had a round gold badge about 3/4" inset between the stars, rubys! This was 40 years ago, it was his favorite of many guns. It was in about 85% condition as he had bought it from some famous captains widow and he shot and carried it. I was just getting into smiths and wish I would have got more info on it. He died a number of years ago. I rented him a room as he worked far from home with me. If I recall right the gun also had a mirror king front sight with a gold bead. Duke kept it under his mattress the entire time I knew him.
Out of the many guns I have seen in my lifetime, that gun would be in the top five I would have if given the privledge to own!

The pimp/pearl grip quote is often cited but in fact Patton carried a Colt 380 auto with pearl grips.

Patton also sometimes carried a Remington Model 51 .380 given to him by Gen. Kenyon Joyce - he had special black grips inlaid with his general's stars put on it. You will occasionally see a photo of him wearing it.

Here's another photo of Patton's registered .357 Magnum. He ordered it as a Lt. Col. while stationed at Fort Shafter in Hawaii in 1935. Note that he had the stock screw located lower on his custom ivory stocks so that his initials could be central on them. Reproductions I've seen do not mimic this touch.

GLL,

Is that a nickel, 5" Outdoorsman? Wow! I'm green with envy. Really superb revolver you have there. Impressive...and any other adjectives you can think of! (smile)
