For us Brethen in Uniform, who is carrying a S&W Auto (2nd generation, 3rd generation or TSW) because they want to. In this time of plastic guns, it is refreshing to see a stainless gun in duty holsters.

I just picked up two minty late 4506-1's.

I qualify with one of them and carry it. Not all the time, but I do carry it .

I shoot it much better than USP 45 or a Glock 21. I like to shoot it more. It kicks A LOT less with out Federal HST 230+P ammunition which leaves the barrel of a 4506-1 at a little over 950FPS.

Another reason is that our agency does not let us carry 1911's on or off duty.
An all steel 45 like a 4506-1 is the closest thing I can carry on or off to a full size 1911.

I know plastic guns are all over the place , but many people and many LE still like all steel automatics.

During the interview with an agency I noticed one of the interviewers was carrying a 3rd gen, looked like 5906/4006 size.

My old duty weapon was the 4506-1. We switched two years ago to the M&P 45. For off duty, I qualify with two weapons, a Glock 27 and a S&W 3913 TSW, the original 7 shot version with no accessory rail. I replaced the butt plates on the magazines with the CS9 butt plate with the finger rest. Great shooting 9mm pistol.

I was able to purchase one of our old dept. 4506-1 for a great price. The gun was manufactured in 2006 was sat in the armory as a spare gun. I was an armorer for the 4506.

I carry a 4506-1 in uniform and a 4566/4563/4516 in plainclothes as a detective...plus a 649-2 Bodyguard as a backup in either case.

I'm seeing more 45XX series guns showing up in the hands of younger deputies as well.

From what the deputies tell me, we have Vic Mackey in The Shield and Tom Ludlow in Street Kings to thank for the new found love of 4506s...

I just added the photo...a 649-2 replaced the 442 a while back. I shoot 100 rds a week with the J-Frame for practice and the steel guns are just more comfortable for me.

Carried a 908 off-duty since the late 90's.

My wife is somewhat younger than I. She has been in Law Enforcement for about 5 years, while I have been in for 15 years. Recently she got a job offer at another department. This department allows .45ACP while her old one did not.

She decided she wanted a .45. I told her she could take my Smith & Wesson 4563TSW. She stated that she did not want that old gun. She started with a Glock and then went to a M&P.

However,at the range one day, she picked up the 4563TSW to shoot it. She was drilling targets left and right. She turned around and stated that she would be taking this one. She leaves for the NRA Firearms Instructor Course in 2 weeks with it.

Just goes to show you that us old relics still have the tools to get the job done.

Even though plastic is king here it seems, i still see some of the old girls made of steel around here in a few of the holsters that pass through my office. Some of the PDs old horses (i use that term with the upmost respect) still carry there 4006s, in my building a guy from the DAs office carries a 4516 very nice. In my office they dont let us carry anything, but i have been trying to get that changed, i will just have to wait and see how that goes. If they ever do let us start carrying i will most definitely carry my 4006TSW.

Ok, so the M&P 40C is my issued pistol at this point in my career. BUT... I still enjoy regular practice with some of the older 3rd generations pistolas of years gone by! (4046, 5906, 6906, 3914, 4516 and 6450)

Long live the metal frame Smith and Wesson's!!

I know there are a couple Detroit PD guys that still carry 645's. (yep I'm sure they're 645's 3 peice grip not wrap around) One is a sgt. now and was in the last class that got them. He's managed to keep it through Glock's tenure and now the M&p's reign there. I also know an officer at highland park (mi) PD that still carries his 4006

I'm currently qualified on three models. 4506-1, 4566 and 4513TSW. The 4513TSW gets carried most because I'm getting older......and lazier. ;) Regards 18DAI.

I carried my alloy CQB .45 for a year and a half or so in uniform several years ago, instead of a Glock like most of my co-workers. I still consider it to be one of the best guns I have ever owned. Never a malfunction of any kind. I'm now retired/reserve and still occassionally carry the CQB, or a 3913, when in plain clothes. I was fortunate enough to have been allowed to carry my Series '80 Colt Government for my last seven years in uniform. The CQB performs just as well as the larger, heavier Colt and is more comfortable to carry...ymmv

Beautiful gun Palmetto Sharpshooter! What caliber? Looks like you put a lot of love/work into that gun, especially the dehorning. How did you get the grips stippled? They look comfortable and one can really hang onto them.

Greg

She's a PC5906 and on my hip right now as we gear up for a search warrant. :)

I did the grip. For me, it works better than any aftermarket grip I've tried. Thanks.

I retired in 2001, but until then, I carried S&W exclusively, even though the department in later years, issued Sig Sauer. From 1971 - 1987, it was a model 19 (no dash.) Phase 2, 1987 - 1994, 1st gen. model 59, and finally 1994 to 2001, 4006. I had a variety of off duty guns, but for on duty, nothing but S&W would do.
