Model 30-1 Kit Gun Target UPDATE

.22/32 Kit Gun is an official S&W designation for their 4" .22 target model introduced in 1935 and made on the .32 (I) frame. Kit refers to hunting kit or fishing kit gun; light, handy and easy to pack in a kit. For the previous 25 years all they made was the 6" 22.

It became the Model 34 in 1957 and was offered in 2" and 4" barrels, rd and sq butt, in an Airweight, the Mod 43 and in 22 mag, the Mod 51. Also made on the J frame after 1961 for several years, in stainless as the Mod 63 and lives on as the 617, 651, etc.

Here's an original pre war on top and a '50s new version the Model of 1953 on bottom from another thread:

My 30-1 in .32 cal is of course not a true Kit Gun but mimics it with the factory target sights installed.

Fascinating project, and nicely achieved.

I too have been thinking about producing a custom .38 Regulation Police with adjustable sights. I'm not sure I think of the .38 S&W as a high-accuracy cartridge, but it would be fun to see what it could be encouraged to achieve.

Thanks David,
Since this was a prototype on a gun already re-blued with front blade soldered in place, I started with an old Micro sight base with an existing screw on the right side attaching it to the blade. I suggest a different approach for the next one.

I will start with an N frame one piece blade and ramp (for the needed sight heigth) and mill the base to J frame size proportion. Then mill off the original J or I frame blade and mill a slot for the new ramp/base piece and pin in place just like a factory installation. One could even use a factory ramp/base with red insert if preferred.
