Labradors are the best dogs! I did something I've never done before this morning. I was taking Bailey to go for a run at Hidden Lake Gardens and came upon a couple of Labradors running loose on the county highway. You could tell they were not savvy street dogs as they almost got hit by a truck coming from the other direction. I decided that I had to stop and see if I could figure out where they belonged. I pulled over and both came running up to me so I grabbed the one with the dog tags. He is a big Chocolate Lab with a telephone and address on the collar. I left a message for the owner that I had her dogs. I decided to haul them back home. I opened the back door to the truck and there was Bailey watching everything& wagging her tail. I calmed her down and told the Chocolate to get in and he just jumped in no problems. The Yellow Lab female was a little hesitant, but she jumped in on her second attempt. Here they were acting as if this was just a normal day and they were best buddies! Everyone got along fine (just a lot of sniffing going on). They sat in the truck like Larry Moe & Curley! Anyway I took the dogs to the farm house address on the collar only to find the front door was open! I hollered for someone but no one answered. I figured the dogs had somehow let themselves out the door, so I grabbed each by their collar and led them to the open door. On the way the Yellow girl started pulling and finally flopped on her back like she didn't want to go in the house, but I finally coaxed her to go in. I shut the door and again called the owner to let her know what I did.
About 45 minutes later the owner called and I told her what I did. She said she had a Chocolate male, but the Yellow Female was the neighbor's dog. I said she is yours now as I put them both in your house. No wonder I had to coax he to go; she probably thought I was kidnapping her! The owner & I both laughed and she thanked me and was grateful that I took the time to help, as she was in Saline and couldn't get home now. She said she never lets her dog run free, so he might easily have been hit on Tipton Highway with traffic running at 60 mph. Anyway I did my good deed for the day, and I have to give credit to my Bailey Girl for being so good and sharing her truck with 2 strangers. Labs are the best dogs!
Here's a picture of Bailey; too bad I forgot to take a picture of Larry Moe & Curley in the truck- dang...

Cool story. You did a good deed, for sure. Those dogs coulda got hurt, or worse.

Our dog that just passed was 1/2 lab and 1/2 border collie. He was an awesome dog.

We now have a 11-12 week old German Shepherd pup that gets into everything! I'll think he'll be a really good dog.

...... with a telephone and address on the collar ...

How convenient - I never thought to put a telephone on my dog's collar :D;).

Labs and Goldens have always held a special place in my heart - pure loyalty with that spark of intelligence (and often mischief) in the eyes....can't help but love 'em!

Nice rescue of those dogs. They could have gotten hurt for sure. I'm suprised the 3 got along so well together in your truck. Labs are great companions.

Nice work, great rescue!

I'm guessing with the nice spring weather around us, they just needed an outdoor adventure to get the blood flowing!

As a Lab owner [heck, just a dog owner] I appreciate what you did.

My late dad and I hauled a couple of bear dogs back to the cabin they,
and their owner, were staying at many years ago.
They were miles off course and the owner was still in the woods.
He'd put the phone no. and address of the bar the cabin was next to
on the collar for the bear hunting trip.
They were a lot more docile than I would have figured.

I have always been a Springer Spaniel man, myself. But appreciate
labs owned by others.

Those ole labs sure get around. Ever notice how many collie/labs, shephard/labs, beagle/labs, poodle/labs or whatever/labs there are?

Having a yellow lab myself I have to agree with you, Labs have a certain enthusiasm that I enjoy. Mine thinks life is a big party and everybody should join her. Anyway I am glad you helped the dogs. At some point your good dead will be returned.

Here's mine

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. Sideways- your Huckleberry is a doll! Looks like the dog in the movie Patton! Marsh, your Chauncy is a beautiful mix, what a good combination; he is georgious! Troy, your picture captures the other half of a labs life. Now that I think about it, they have it pretty good : sleep 1/2 the time and chase squirrels, rabbits & geese, go swimming the other half. Not a bad job!
Take Care,

Lost Labs will, indeed, run to just about anyone that calls them. Had 2 errant dogs show up at the place several years ago. One a young Choc Lab, the other a Bird dog of some sort. No need to try to catch the Lab, I just tossed a tennis ball for him and he brought it right to me, his buddy stayed in the brush and was shy.

Called the number on the collar, ( was more than 5 miles away), and the owner was overjoyed to find them.

I won't get into the whole "best dog" discussion, but I will say that every Lab I have ever met -- yellow, black, chocolate, mixed -- has been a super dog. The happiest dog I have ever met was a Yellow Lab that hung out with my neighbor over 20 years ago.
