Quick question: Timney or Geissele

I am getting ready to buy a new trigger for the M&P 15-22. The purpose I am looking for is a crisp trigger that will allow for fun when I occasionally use the Slide Fire stock.

Two options at this point:
- Timney 3lb trigger
- Geissele S3G trigger

My only concern is light primer strikes; thoughts?

I am getting ready to hit the buy button. Looking for random internet advice, solicited from sources that I cannot validate to be creditable.

i had the 3lb timney in my precision ar and loved the hell out of it,,, it would work on cheap steel case ammo with hard primers and every thing else i tired and it did work on a bull barrel .22lr upper i did have.


when money allows i will be getting this same trigger for my Performance Center 15-22

Just FYI, I'm running a Geissele SSA (not the 'E' version) in my 15-22, with JP Yellow springs, which were left over from my first tinkerings with the stock trigger unit.

Runs extremely sweetly, with no light strikes - and I certainly wouldn't want a lighter trigger for the tactical comps we run at my club.

You might also take a look at the Jard, single-stage triggers - half the cost of the Timney and Geissele.

I put an adjustable Jard in my 15-22 and the 1.5 pound spring gives me a 2.5 pound pull with no creep. I could probably go lighter if I wanted to reduce the sear engagement to the minimum.

I run a non-adjustable Jard in my 5.56, and intended to fit one up to my 15-22 when I got it last summer. Even though the 15-22's trigger runs about 6 pounds it wasn't all that bad for fast drills in stock configuration. I did throw in the yellow springs which took off a pound's weight, but then got some light strikes.

The odd thing is that for the same kinds of shooting I really like the 3# pull on the 5.56. The 6# stock trigger on the .22 suits me just fine. Most of my firing is quick work from low ready on a 1/2 size reduced target, such as 3.0 sec from 50 yards, 2.0 from 25, 1.25 from l5, and 1.0 from 7 yards. I think the lighter weight of the .22 and the float of the carbine has something to do with the heavier trigger giving me better control at speed. Odd, but it works.

At any rate I really like shooting the little guy.

My Timney 3# in my 15-22 is the cleanest trigger I've ever shot. It's deceptive; the trigger gives good resistance and breaks like glass with no creep and very liitle travel. In all of my firing and incessant drills I've never mistakenly engaged the trigger. Installed on my 5.56? It made my groups shrink by half. Love it!

If you want a drop in trigger the Timneys are about the best you can get. If you are shooting speed events there is nothing, except the AT Gold in my opinion, in the same class as the Geissele Super 3-Gun. If you are more concerned with things like creep and such there are several decent triggers out there from various venders. But nothing I know of currently resets as fast or has as short a lockup as the S3G. If you have not tried one then you likely don't know a lot about speed triggers. I can turn blazing times in some of the common speed drills used for Steel Challenge. With the original RRA 2-stage + JP springs I found my trigger finger was faster than the RRA trigger could reset. So sometimes it lockup and failed to reset. With the S3G I have no problems. With the JP springs added my trigger gauge reads that it breaks at about 1.25#, so I may go back to the factory Geissele springs for safety rerasons. But I have not had a single light strike with the JP springs using either Fed 550 or CCI-MM 40g.
I do not know about the Slide-Fire as our club does not allow any type of bump fire mechanisms on club grounds unless you want your membership revoked.

So about a week ago i was at a local gun show and a dealer there had both of the ones you are looking at. I explained to him that I had the 15-22 and I had the slide fire stock.

He told me to go with the Timney 3lbs. The Timney is a single stage trigger and has almost no creep to it. Compared to a 2 stage which has movement before the trigger is tripped. The dealer said to go with the timney for this reason. He said the 15-22 will run great with the timney.

So I bought it. I was previously using the stock trigger with JP yellow springs. I probably have about 8-10,000 rounds through with that trigger so its self polished. I could only get half mag dumps out of the slide fire.

With the Timney it runs the full mag with ease.

You won't be disappointed. Ive beat the hell out of mine. I installed the KNS Gen 2 anti walk pins today. My friggin pins kept falling out from all the vibration. All I can say is that they are a must have. A little pricey compared to the others but when you put them on you know what's up. Rock Solid!

Thanks for the heads up on the KNS pins. I found that they make them specifically for the M&P 15-22; but they have two versions - whats the difference?

Google'd a few things - found out the difference to my question above is the exterior retainer piece. Gen 2 MOD 2 is a skinny version compared to the fat Gen 2.

If he did you would likely have realized the S3G has no detectable 2nd stage when pulling it. It is a sudden trigger not one with a perceived point when you know it will go off. Been described by 3-gun shooters as a ball bearing trigger. 30 rounds in 4 seconds is what it can do in a 3-gun match. That is equal to 450 rds/min. Bump firing it might be able to go even faster.
Anyway sounds like you got your problem fixed.

Actually he did have both set up in dummy guns. I guess what I was trying to say is that with the single stage the trigger has very little movement before it goes off. Where the 2 stage has the travel during the first stage. Both triggers had a great feel, but with using the slide stock I think the shorter the trigger has to move the better.

They are good triggers but SOCOM uses Geissele triggers and the guy who writes the Competition AR books prefers the Geissele as the best trigger he has used at the time the book was printed (2010 I think) even though he has plenty of builds using other tiggers including the Timneys. Just depends on what you want the trigger to do. Some types of triggers are better at some types of shooting. You would not put a trigger designed for National Match Rifle competition in a 3-gun AR build.

I use the Giessele SSA in my primary AR (Noveske) and will be putting one in the 15-22 at some point. The Giessele is the best 2 stage (for my purposes) that I have tried.
