Picked her up today. Out of all the revolvers Smith has made the 49 series has always gotten my attention. Could waste a lot of time on the positive attributes of the 49, I will just show the 649.

I have a new M638-3, a M649-3 & my most recent addition, a no dash M649.
It's no surprise that I like the 649 better than the 638, which I like a lot, but what
surprises me is that I like the 649 more than the -3, which I like a lot more than the 638.
I still can't put my finger on why the 649 beats out the -3, maybe it's simply an
issue of weight. The one place the M649-3 beats out the 649 is in it's longer ejector rod.

That is my very thought also. Ever since I saw your -3, I have added to my list of wants. I want the -3 for the extra weight and it looks so much better. I forgot about the longer ejector rod. Plus the usage of 357 magnums when and if I ever have to use it. So in the mean time I will still have to admire your's!

The two reasons you mentioned, longer ejector rod & .357 capability are
why the -3 should beat out the no dash 649 without it even being a contest.
That's why it surprises me so much..
Maybe it's simply the fact that the no dash is the new kid on the block
and I'm still in the "honeymoon phase."

It just hit me...from that angle it is like a baby L-frame!

It is one hefty J Frame, that's for sure!!

Congrats on your new 649 they are great guns.
Living in South Florida means I wear shorts about 95% of the year ,
As a result I prefer the Airweight 38/638 version for CCW only because it carrys easier for me in the front pocket.
If you like 649's you might find this one interesting,
Its 1 of 100 engraved 649's made to comemorate the release in 1985 ,
Coincidentally its serial number ends in 1 as well.

When we came back from Ramey A.F.B. in Puerto Rico it was to McCoy A.F.B. in Orlando Florida. When my dad got new orders he didn't know were Orlando was, as it was just a small town in 1969. A few years later it would become famous because of Disney. 30 years later I moved to Georgia as the high temps and high humidty was to much...so I know why you go with lighter and shorts!

I have a 649 no dash, and it's a great gun. The bodyguard configuration is my favorite J frame. Enjoy your new acquisition, it's really nice.

That is exactly what I have been looking for, but was told did not exist. Folks (including S&W) said that the full stainless 649, with the slightly longer barrel and .357 rating came at the same time as "the lock". Is yours a very new version (dreaming!) or one that came just before the lock was added?

Kicking myself too, because I gave up my hunt and spent a lot of money on a 640 Pro, just because it came without "--- ----"! ^L^

Thanks Ray, sorry about that. I did notice in a minute or two and adjusted my post, but too late! Sorry!
I like my 49, the blued steel model, but after a steady diet of the 158 grain +P it is starting to develop end-shake, so I was looking to move to a stronger version.
Carried my 640pro IWB yesterday for the first time, cinch up the belt it's heavy! ^L^
I also have to find a simple accessible way to carry a couple of loaded moon clips. I have a nice little black nylon two section pouch with velcro covers, but it's too "tactical" to be subtle. I need something more "innocent" looking.

I did.
Carrying a 1911 is no fun during the summer. Got a '52 Colt LW Commander and it is still a little to much. The J-frames are great and the 49 series is perfect!
