I made a huge mistake related to the release of the new Shield firearm, I was the guy that took the "leaked" picture. I had no plans when I took the picture, I was just excited to see the new M&P and had a spur of the moment impulse to take a picture of it. Now, because of that picture, 2 very good employees of Smith and Wesson have been released from their employment there. Do I have to say how I feel.... besides embarrassed, I feel terrible that these two loyal and hard working employees, J and T are now out of a job. I have to say, if there is anything I could do to change things I would, I have tried contacting a few of the white shirts I thought may be involved in this decision and have had no success or response back. From what I understand it goes to the top of the chain for this way over the top decision.

This is a situation that has so many levels of mistakes that it just doesn't seem right to punish anyone. Even I can say I didn't release the picture publicly, but I did talk about seeing and handling it. The mistake I made, saying I had a picture but didn't think it was a good idea to show it publicly. I succumbed to a few guys on M4Carbine asking me to pm the picture to them and they promised not to pass it on... what a fool I was, it may not have been them though. It may have been someone smart enough to trace other pictures I posted in the past back to my Photobucket account, I believe someone definitely got the picture from there. By the time I realized the picture was displayed publicly, it was photoshopped badly and I knew it was my picture, it was too late. Next, it showed up on blogs around the net, I just had a sick feeling then that it was not going to be good. Well, it wasn't until the Friday, after the official release that I got a call informing me of T & J getting released from Smith and Wesson and I can tell you, I was stunned.

To sum this up, I want to publicly apologize to these 2 fine employees of S&W, they are truly 2 of the best employees I have met there, both hard working and always a pleasure to deal with, I was the one that broke their trust. We all had a relationship in that store, I visited often and always had guns on layaway there, in fact I have 2 guns at this moment, the Governor and a 627 Pro on layaway. Every time I walked in that store and spoke with T and J, they were friendly and ya know what we talked about.... you guessed it, guns, not just any gun but Smith and Wesson guns. The new guns, the M&P's, the new 1911 E series, the Governor, the M&P AR's, if it was S&W, we talked about it. They were truly company employees, 2 of the best and I just can't believe they are being punished like this. It is a huge mistake letting them go. I know I would have never seen that gun and taken a picture if I understood the ramifications. I was shown that gun because I was trusted, I just didn't realize the seriousness of the advertising campaign and what it meant to some. The funny part is several people said how the picture must be a "leak" from corporate to generate more interest, many said it was a fake picture, but the bottom line, it actually generated positive interest in the Shield and no doubt enhanced if anything, the release. I had no plans of having a picture anymore than J & T had of losing their jobs. This is one of those situations where we can all learn from our mistakes. Whatever happened, it was not done with any malice intended by anyone. Give a stern warning, a few days off, anything but being fired.... just doesn't seem fair.

Ok, one more point I would like to make. I am as loyal of a Smith and Wesson customer as there has ever been, I would not do anything to hurt this company. I would take the heat and stand up and be heard if I felt something wrong or inaccurate was being posted here or anywhere else, I would step up to the plate and defend Smith and Wesson products at the drop of the hat. I promote and almost exclusively use S&W because I believe they are the best. I believe the company is the best in the world of guns and because of this I believe they are run by the best in the world, but when it comes right down to why they are successful..... it's because of good employees, no, great employees, it's the guys and the girls in the front lines, it's those people in the stores, in manufacturing, at the ranges and just plain on the street that promote and use the Smith and Wesson product, it's the little guys. Those good people are few and far between, I beg Smith and Wesson corporate, if the people that saw the Shield picture see this post, please.... please reconsider keeping these 2 great employees of your company, they didn't leak that picture, I did!!

I dont know anything about this but admire you for manning up. Hope it works out for you and the employees.

I commend you for your honesty. I don't know what S&W corporate policy is concerning this matter but obviously somebody did something very wrong to get fired.

I have no way of knowing if this post is legitimate or not, although the poster shows 1,082 postings here, one would assume hes not a nut. First, the employees had no business showing anything the corporation didn't want shown. You had no business taking a photo of it, and sending it to anyone. Trusts were broken, this is why terminations took place. How far have you gone up the S&W corporate ladder to tell this story? If you reach the top, it may just help, but again, two employees did the wrong thing.

Guess I don't get this post? The photo of the S&W Shield has been on the S&W website probably since before we read the press release....what exactly is the problem? Did the OP release the unauthorized photo he took without permission before S&W announced it? That's what I'm guessing, pretty rambling and inexact post, can see the fellow is very upset, so I'll wait to hear more to clarify things. We already have holster orders for the gun?????????? It's no secret.

Cheers;
Lefty

Well lets assume the post is correct...
And say I am Mr Smith&Wesson, ie El Supremo...

Why fire two good employees??? It is bound to get out eventually, and it probly helped sales in the long run...

I mean IF you want to keep it a SECRET, then do not show it to anybody???

I say BIG DEAL...

PS I think ANY S&W semiauto other than a Mod 41, Mod 52 and their 1911's are a piece of ****. I have owned Mod 39's and a Mod 59 by the way, and shot most of the others... Pieces of ****, IMHO.

Back in the Day it was Colt or Browning for Semiautos, S&W for Revolvers.

Today even the S&W revolvers are pieces of ****, look at how many have to go back, look at how many crack the frame, how many have barrels off center...

Maybe they should fire the TOP TEN BOSSES...

And hire a real Pistolario to be their No1...

If all of this is correct how in the heck did Smith and Wesson find out that the names of the two employees who allowed a third party to snap pictures of a weapon before it's release?
We all had a relationship in that store
what store?
I'm with oldflatfoot, this needs a little more explaining for me. Sorry if I'm more than a little slow.

"I got a call informing me of T & J getting released from Smith and Wesson and I can tell you, I was stunned."

A call from who?

Read the story several times and and I am assuming this took place at S&W Springfield MA. If so, I don't think you can persuade anyone at the corporate level at this point. The two employees apparently violated some corporate policy, and you violated their trust. It's a mess that shouldn't have happened, don't blame yourself unless you knew it was a violation of S&W's policy, if the employees followed policy nothing would have taken place. That is about the way it goes in the real world no matter who the employer happens to be. Live and learn like we all do.

Ok, sorry if I rambled around, lots of stuff rolling around in my head. Just to clarify, there was a picture of The Shield that floated around the internet several days before the official pictures were released, S&W had a build up ad campaign, with bits and pieces of the gun shown for a short while each day prior to the official release. I mistakenly allowed a picture to be released to the public, because of that 2 employees that had access to the gun were released or at the very least, sent home until a decision can be made of their status I don't think it was too hard for the powers to be to figure out where the picture came from. I blabbed about seeing the gun at the S&W retail store, I didn't hide the facts, didn't realize I was doing anything wrong and didn't publisize the picture I had, someone got hold of the pic and blogged it.

This did occur at the S&W factory retail store in Springfield, and yes I do hang there often, I didn't just find 40 plus S&W guns the last 2.5 years... bought many of them there and got to know most of the employees enough to be trusted more than your average walk-in civilian. I missed the part about how important it was to not leak a picture of the gun until S&W did officially. I either would not have taken a picture or I would have done a better job of keeping it private, didn't realize how important it was to someone to get that picture and blog it all over the net.

We all made a mistake, it wasn't premeditated, it was just a mistake I am certain would never happen.I can only hope that by posting this here, someone up the corporate ladder will see this and it may help to clarify the unfortunate events leading up to my ill advised actions.

So the employees were no doubt warned about the consequences of letting anyone see, let alone take pictures, of the new gun prior to it's release. S&W spent many months and much money keeping it under wraps and shooting the "teaser" ads. The employees were trusted to keep the secret.

The employees disregarded the rules.

They were caught and fired.

I see no problem here.

TRUST, is something very valuable.

I worked 40 years in R&D and would never have talked about a secret corporate project let alone take a photo.

Maybe Social Media is an additional reason for many job loses to offshore places, NO SECRETS in industry.

I see you were in the Navy, if you had leaked or photoed some Naval secret, you and the others could have been headed for Leavenworth.

LOOSE LIPS do sink ships.

TRUST, remember what TRUST really is?

Corporate secrets are very important to the corporation, they had money invested in their ADVERTISING PROJECT and THEIR SCHEDULE for the release of the new SHIELD.

Violation of corporate policy and trust subjects one to a DISMISSAL, and if you weren't even an S&W employee, just a customer friend, you were an outsider and even more so.

TRUST and RESPECT these things go together, HONOR THEM ALWAYS.

As someone who has worked in a few places were confidentiality is a must, I can tell you that if the employees knew the gun was to be kept a secret, and I am sure that they did since the idea seemed to be to keep the gun a secret, then if they violated company policy (which we will probably never know for sure) then they were terminated legitimately. It's unfortunate, but I have seen really good veteran employees everywhere I have ever worked get lax and break a rule or a policy and it cost them their jobs, and in some cases worse. It happens, it shouldn't but there it is. The word confidential was invented for just such a thing.

not trying to ask stupid questions but when did the shield get released?? bcuz i was at a A LGS and they had one sitting out saying that they havnt been released and but are taking orders so when the do get released you can get one, this was bout 3wks ago.

matmat417,

Released April 12 as part of a big deal at the NRA convention in St. Louis.
S&W had many shipped or shipping for that release date.

They also had confidential agreements with some holster, laser, and aftermarket sight
makers so that accessories would be ready to go on that date too.

It was all part of a big S&W marketing campaign for the new M&P SHIELD.

For the record, unless you know different, this isn't Nasa, this was a gun that was out there and yes, some had seen it before this picture showed up, it isn't like the whole world saw it and it isn't like it broke national security, lets not over dramatize this. I screwed up, it didn't hurt the release one bit, in fact, if anything it shook up a few bulletin boards and created a little more excitement and interest,. It did not damage the release of this new gun. Was it wrong, I think I addressed that and know what I did, as do others. It's the kind of thing that will never happen again. It's kinda like growing up and occassionally making a mistake, then learning from it. It's not always neccessary to take extreme punishment steps to make a point.

I understand about not revealing corporate secrets or leaking info before the launch date, but in this case S&W ain't exactly introducing anything revolutionary. It's an M&P single stack...big whoop. Give the employees a stern talking to and be done with it.
