First of all, new member here with 1st thread. I have the chance to buy 3 S&W revolvers. I'd like to know what is a good value for each one. This will be my first handgun purchase so any assistance beyond price would be appreciated also!

Model 60 .38 SS 2" barrel Chief's Special: in original box with papers but no tool. Looks perfect no dings/scratches not even sure if it's been fired; original wood grips. I can buy for $300

Model 64-2 SS 2" barrel: in box but no papers/tool; has pachymar grips w/slight wear lower left side; two small dings on frame above cylinder. I can buy for $250.

Model 66-4 .357 SS 4"barrel: No cardboard box but is in plactic S&W branded carrier; has what looks to be original wood grips (rounded butt); this one also looks close to perfect with no dings/scratches. I can buy for $300.

Are these fair prices? If not, what should I offer on each? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

I would pay the following:
Model 60 - $450 to $500. I'm actually looking for one of those.

Model 64 2" - $375ish, maybe more - but then, I don't really want one.

Model 66 - I had an opportunity to get a 4" 66-2 for $550 with box/papers. I passed on it simply because I already have a 686 4".

all those prices are absolute steals. You could make a profit on each if you don't like it.

Also, you're looking at 3 guns that are no longer made. They'll only go up in value.

Welcome, also. As the others mentioned, all three are at excellent prices, and if you decide you don't want any of them they will easily sell for more than you paid.

The model 66 would be the easiest gun to use, since it has the longest barrel and adjustable sights that are more visible. You also have the option of using both .38 Special and .357 in it, so if you can only get one that would be my choice. Hope this is helpful.

These prices are between wholesale and retail. I would consider these to be reasonable. If the title is clear to these guns and there is no funny business involved, I'd probably buy these.

Wow...thanks for all the responses/advice. I'll be buying all three of them tomorrow! I did some prelim research on them but couldn't find a lot of info on what to pay. So, I appreciate the feedback. I'll post pics when I have them.

Thanks again!

Well I bought all 3 of them. I know these have been stored for a long time. Is there anything I should do before I fire them? All advice is much appreciated!

Here a few pictures I snapped when I got them home. Not sure if the pictures will show up..I was having problems attaching them...

If you are familiar with firearms in general, do what you normally do :).

If not, check the bore and chambers to see they are unobstructed and clean, not to mention empty. Cycle them through each chamber both by cocking and by pulling the trigger all the way through (double action) - this will also let you know what pull weight to expect with firing. A very small amount of gun lubricant on the visible moving parts and inside the action via the hammer channel wouldn't hurt either.

Then, take to your local shooting area and enjoy!

Congratulations! That's a heck of start into S&W wheel guns. I'm a stainless fan myself.

Thanks everyone! I'm excited about the purchase. Going to range after the holiday to do some plinking.

One quick last question...as far as value is concerned does it detract a lot if I were to replace the grips on the 66 with something like a pachymar? (I would obviously keep the wood)

The 64 has the pach's and they fit my hand much better than the wood on the 66.

Thanks again!
