bi-pod question

I've been checking out the 15-22 pic. thread and noticed how some, well, a lot of people have bi-pods. I was checking Amazon for some stuff and UTG has a bi-pod pretty cheap, but apparently it's not tall enough for the magazine to clear.

What brand of bi-pods are most using other than UTG, if that's even what they are using.

My Harris bipods are 20+ years old and still trouble free. They've shot a lot of prairie dogs with several different guns. One pair outlasted two rifle barrels.

I bought this one, UTG Bipod , and I love it. Good price and a joy to use. After a lot of reading, I thought that I would need the extra height, but since I sit on a bench at my gun club, it is plenty tall enough with the legs all the way up.

I use the Leapers-UTG sniper bi-pod, its just like the other UTG bi-pods posted above except the sniper goes from 6"-12". My 25 round mags clear the bench with my bi-pod in the 6" position.


Some people will say 6" is not high enough but it works for me, I guess if your shooting from a bench and shooting up at targets it might not work out. At the range I shoot at, the targets are just a little lower than the firing line where the bench is.

This is the bipod I bought for both my 15-22 and my AR-15:

However, for bench shooting at the outdoor range in warm weather, I prefer this:
Caldwell Rock Jr. Rifle Front Shooting Rest

Since I take both rifles to the outdoor range when it's warm enough, the shooting rest makes it much easier to switch between rifles, as well as shooting standing or kneeling without having to remove the bipod. During the winter I use the Harris bipod on the 15-22 at the indoor range by my house. You might consider both, depending on your shooting style and your needs.

You need a 9-13" to clear a 25-round magazine on the bench or prone.

I have never touched any of the UTG bipods so I can't offer any opinion on them. I have a Harris that I use on everything. My second choice would be a Caldwell. Since I don't like vertical forward grips, those with the built-in legs do nothing for me.

Neat trick, when the 25-round magazines protrudes 7" below the quad rail, unless you are shooting with the barrel depressed.

No smoke and mirrors here, Leapers-UTG has the bi-pod listed as 6"-12" I'm not sure what the actual distance is.

Notice the angle of the rifle with the bi-pod in the 6" position.

Try measuring the actual leg extension. You've also got a very large mounting, there that adds to the height. But, hey, if it works for you, that's fine.

They have the specs listed on Leapers.com its the UTG tactical OP bipod- Tactical/Sniper profile. The website I ordered it from and on the box has it listed as 6"-12" but from the bottom of the legs to the top of the mount its 7.9"

That explains it.

A 6-9" will work, primarily if fully extended, but the 9-13" give you much more flexibility.

I have the same UTG Tactical/Sniper length bi-pod that Ghost_Soldier has, it's ok for occasional use and it's cheap.

It's stable enough on the lowest setting but I wouldn't recommend it if you want higher, although as already discussed the low setting is sufficient to clear the 25 round mag.

Go with the Harris. Mines been on my Mini over 30 years and ZERO problems with anything. It's on tough cookie.

I just bought an Atlas for my 15-22's big brother, and am letting go my basic NC Star bipod in the sellers thread above (post #13). It worked perfectly for the 15-22, and had plenty of height to clear full-size mags from a bench of from the ground. PM me if you're interested.
