I feel let down by the NRA speech

Del Fuego - - -Thankfully, I'm not the only one that thinks this way !

There's lots I liked in the speech - - - it was more of a proactive stance, and unapologetic. Good.

It brought up No Gun Zones and the impact of violent media messages. Good.

But, there was no mention of that in just about all the shootings the killer was on psychiatric drugs that have been shown to increase the likelihood of suicide and violent behavior. (Such unstable individuals are more easily influenced by violent media & games also.) My guess is that he knows this, but there's Big Pharma and the medical industry to deal with there.

Most importantly, he didnt address how rare & unlikely such events are. Much less likely than being struck by lightening.

In this country today, perhaps its no longer politically correct or possible to point out that a fear isnt justified. So we have 'airliner security' even though several different government agencies have tested that system and been able to smuggle whatever weapons they wanted on board. The outside appearence and 'feeling safe' seems more important than actual results.

Repeal No Gun Zone laws. As for police in every school - - - - we can't afford such a waste of resources. Might as well hire zookeepers in every school - - - - just in case the lions & tigers escape their cages.

I work in a large high school and we have a cop on campus and that doesn't make me feel any safer. I still locked my classroom door last Monday.

When I watched the NRA speech, I viewed it very critically because that is what the other side was doing, and I came back feeling dejected. I did not see the NRA winning over anybody by using any kind of convincing dialogue. I am just glad that the 2nd Amendment will not allow guns to be banned.

As a side note, a few of my coworkers who don't own guns now want to buy one because of all the anti-gun nonsense going around.

How to fund school security? First I belive we are talking grade schools and high schools here. Colleges and universitys usualy do have paid security for a long tine now plus some students now have permits. I have wrote plenty on this site and others in the last few days. Here again is what I wrote on another thread.
You do it like its done in courthouses, etc. I did security work for over 35 years. You have a armed guard sitting at a desk at the entrance. You have to walk past him. You either show him a pass or he has a list, knows you or whatever. Some have detectors like a flyway gate. Depends on how big the place is and what they think you need. Security would vary from a retired cop or farmer sitting in his car in front of a one room school house (if they still exist) to uniformed officers walking the halls.
Security can be anything from a qualified teacher packing to the above. The way to decide is the school board has meetings with a local police chief or security experts to advise them. The cheapest way is to have volenteers that pass some type qualification standard and background checks. You would have a roster system set up to get ahold of your volenteers to scheduel. I would recommend maybe two half days a week per person if you had enough people.
Barring that, how about that stymulus money the potus is trying to give away? If he actualy wants to pay guards besides I am sure it would create a lot of jobs.
The school would need a safe where the guard could get stored rifle or shotgun or maybe vest if need be.
The system could be flexable for everything from volenteers to paid officers at large schools.
Once it was announced that ever school had security odds are few if any would be attacked.
Now the flaw with this idea is that good security works too well. You have no way of knowing of how many nuts you have thwarted by just being there. After long periods of nothing happening you are taken less serious. Expendses will be cut back and volenteers will feel less needed unless something actualy happens. Thats the nature of the beast.

Well DelFuego

One way, just one way, is by not giving BILLIONS to foreign countries that don' give a rip about us and our principles. Not nearly as hard as you seem to think. Your military, you must know how much $ we give these people, if not, Goggle it.

The hard part is getting the politicians off their *** and take some action. Some are so overweight that a bicycle ride and any form of physical activity (I think you know what I mean) would send them to the emergency room.

SSOP (so sick of politicians)

You missed the point of stating the thousands of RETIRED LEOS and Military persons.

Many of those would be more than happy to do it for free.

Just like we have un paid school crossing guards at every major intersection.

All our elementary and Middle schools have a full time Sheriff Deputy Resource officer. Car is parked out front every day.

dick..i would add to your observation the same way we afford to surround the president(s) with lifetime bodyguards, same way we have armed security around our money, the same way we fund our military

Exactly, we find money to guard banks, armored car service, courthouses, Gov't industrial installations and contractors, Gov't buildings, and the list goes on and on.

Anybody ever wonder why no one ever tries a mass shooting at a Police Station. Here's a clue, 'cause guys have guns in there. :D

There will be many that will say it's not possible, it's not practical, it's not what we want for our society, blah, blah, blahhhhhh . . . ..

In holding elected office to gun clubs and other organizations over the years and being in charge at times and following a good leader at others I have observed that though many can always tell you why you can't or shouldn't do something they never seem to have a solution to offer.

So my policy has always been lead, follow, or get the h**l out of the way and you can't vote "no" unless you have a better idea.

Around here there's lots of kids wearing $100 tennis shoes and chatting on cell phones. My guess is that we can afford whatever security at our schools that we might choose to have. Local business can create a lot of goodwill and advertising by contributing to community programs. Local efforts, assets and solutions.... If your local community wants to provide security at schools, surely y'all can handle it without crawling to Washington for guidance and funding. Just do it.

Small federal tax, small state tax, small city or town tax combined with volunteers, fund raising, donations whatever it takes. If you want it bad enough you will get it.

Come on! How on earth can we fund cops in every school in the United States?

Well there, we put em on airplanes after 9-11..........Air Marshals, Federal Officers and State LEOs flying armed for safer skies....

My wife works in the school system as does my son and his wife....The securing of our schools will be a state by state,
school system by individual school effort. Some have already moved in that direction and we will see others follow.

To say out educators are not capable of securing their work place and defending our children,
refusing men and women that teach our children the safety that this day and time
requires is just adding to their defenselessness and venerability.

By their very roles as educators and teachers, alone has proven their ability to learn themselves,
surely they could be trained to handle a firearm in a safe and efficient manner.
Even the lowly among us, here on this venue claim to be able of body and mind for that task.

Just the mere chance that a suicidal assassin would meet an armed school facility member (en-route to their destiny of mayhem and
national fame by way of the news media), would deter many of these mentally deranged murders in our society.

One thing I don't yet understand why so many of these monsters that murder innocent persons commit self-inflicted gunshot wounds to end their own lifes...As apposed to suicide by cop or 'going out in a blaze with a gunfight with police/first responders?

Pre-disposed to self destruct, or fear of capture,

I just don't know....except,

.

Want funding to protect our country?

Lets stop govt funding projects to figure out why grass is green and the sky is blue? Does Bigfoot exist?

Lets bring our troops home from the places we are protecting that hate us and don't want us there anyway. If we don't protect our kids, the future leaders of this country, it certainly won't matter in years to come how smart we have become or how much we liberated other countries.

America we need to get our prorities in order!
