I am asked this every Xmas. Surely the question should be "What did you give for Xmas?"
It would be nice to get away from the greed of wanting material possessions and replace it with charity and love. But why should it be limited to one day a year.
I don't have much to give other than my friendship. That must be worth more than all the money in the world.
And we go through the whole excessive drinking an gluttony thing again next week. Why? I'll spend the evening with a dear old French friend and his friends. A few drinks and snacks, nothing excessive, then home to bed. Just being nice to each other. No fireworks, no count down to midnight. I will feel happy that I have been in the company of nice people regardless of the date.
So if you see someone begging on the street on new year's eve take him or her to MacDonald's for a meal. Or even better invite him or her into your home. If you claim to be a Christian, be one. I'm not, but I think I have a better understanding of what it should mean than many who claim to be.
Seasonal greetings to all and a Happy new number on the calendar next week.
