I'm splurging. I have a budget of around $1,000 to spend on a 9mm as most of my handguns are 9mm and I have the ammo. I am looking for a classic, sharp looking gun, that is accurate, reliable, and COULD be carried if I chose to. I carry all of my handguns, with the .22LR being the only exception.

I'm thinking about a 1911 in 9mm OR Browning Hi-Power. I love 'em both. Which to do!? If I go with a Hi Power I'd likely get a brand new Mark III.

Thanks for helping me spend some money!

I had a P228 a few years back and didnt like it. Sigs dont fit my hand. Functioned fine, just didnt suite me.

We those the only two to chose from? If not, does it have to be a all steel? Would a striker fired be a consideration? Of course there is always the Beretta 92FS or maybe a CZ for the steel side. Walther P99 series, depending on your trigger preference, is a great pistol. Smith and Wesson M&P line is also worth checking out.

CZ75D Compact. Finest combat 9mm in existence. If you can find one. (alloy frame,14 rd mag 1" wide, decocker)

great questions. I'd like SA trigger, or option to carry condition 1. I would like to stay away from striker fire, as I already have 2 M&Ps and a Kahr.

I REALLY dig CZ's and had a 75SA that I wish I could have back, BUT I'm not interested in another one right now.

More thoughts?

A full size 1911 in 9mm is a very soft shooting and enjoyable gun. The full size upper tier production models (Colt, S&W, STI, Springfield, etc) in 9mm are sometimes hard to find, and some models may run above your budget (but not by much.) If you want a good carry 1911 in 9mm, consider the Colt Defender or New Agent, which should be at or slightly below your budget.

If you are willing to look at "budget" models, STI has the Spartan line, and RIA/Citadel make very good guns. You might be able to find these models at about half your budget, which leaves some money for a holster, and more ammo (if you can find any to buy.)

I can't comment on the HP, since I've never owned one. I have had SIGs and H&Ks, and they are very good guns. Or, you could go with a Beretta 92FS...the INOX models are very sharp looking, and very good shooters.

I'd love to own a Browning Hi-Power - it has been on my Grail Gun list for quite a while. I'm very fond of my H&K PSP P-7. Very impressive engineering, and very accurate. I wouldn't mind having the M-8 version, but simply cannot afford one. I think either the Hi-Power, or the H&K would meet your needs, plus, both rank high in the "coolness" factor.

Best of luck,

Dave

Colt New Agent ... TALO edition has the big front sight; standard model has the CQC trench sight. Great to carry, great to shoot.

Beretta Elite!! Be there or be square........:) Love the Sig's and the HP's as well as the CZ's. The Beretta will outlast any others even though almost all of us will never shoot any of them to failure of the gun itself. My shooting pard has a safe full of them(seriously) and has five that have gone to a hundred thousand rounds. Of two that broke, it was a small frame piece that was inconsequential and now .22 kits live on them. The guns still ran broken. The HP's with slim grips feel incredible to me.

Hi Power - duty/battle pistol
HK P30 nicest feeling pistol ever?
HK P2000 LEM 9mm duty/concealed pistol
CZ's are excellent

i have no experience yet with 9mm S&W Shields or 9mm M&Ps
... only 40. M&Ps

They are all similar, but so different at the same time.

My personal favs.

Oh, the Springfield XD-S 9mm is here soon...

Armalite

Howdy,
I have been dragging around a Armalite AR-24 for a couple of years.
It is heavy, but it is reliable, accurate and easy to shoot well. Before that I had an FNP and it was good gear.
I kinda like most everything everyone here has suggested with the exception of the Hi-Power. Neat gun but it hammer bites the dickens out of me.
Good luck with what ever you choose.
Thanks
Mike

Ya' got it right the first time!!

I think that you answered your own question in your orig. post, except you got the second one slightly wrong IMHO.
While I Love and carry the Colt New Agent in .45 ACP, I think the Hi-Power C Series (1977) & eariler are a much better choice if your staying with 9mm, because of their superior workmanship & finish over the later ones. Also, you should be able to get an Excellent (read mint) example of one of these at a gun show for much less than your target price. (Better gun at a lesser price, what's not to like about that) The later Hi-Powers are not an improvement, just cheaper to manufacture.

As I said, The Colt New Agent in .45 ACP is the one that I carry, but if I were to carry a 9mm, It would be one of the six (all eariler) Hi-Power Brownings that I own. I think of 'The Master', John M. Browning, everytime I shoot one of them. Great feeling that, of holding history in your hand. (They all shoot Great BTY)
