Not gun-related.

I have an area in the woods by my house that is woody vines and thick-stalked weeds... rough stuff. I keep it bush-whacked down to keep the copperhead snakes away. I have to bush-whack it at least 4 times each year during the warm months. I have tried to eliminate it with Round-Up and Super-Round-Up to no avail... they drink it like it was Kool-Aid and keep growing.

Is there anything on the market that will give me a total kill of this stuff?

Get a dog and let him piddle on it. Canine urine is deadly on greenery.

If you don't go the dog route, there's a product at Lowes that comes in a large canister with spray hose (I can't remember the name). It's in the weeding section on the lowest shelf. It's contractor-based defoliant, and is supposed to be the best stuff on the market for tough plants. I believe it's $35 per canister.

Thanks, mc5aw, but I already take my dogs to whiz in another area to keep weeded. This section is about 1/2 acre, too much to handle with my dogs!! I'll look for the stuff at Lowe's.

Grazon

Is a pasture herbicide and has a broad kill on broadleafs. I sprayed in on my yard(not a recommended use) and it did a number on the dandylions -99 44/100ths DEAD. However, it also "stunned" the bermuda/centipede mix grass. I also drenched the "jungle" in the outer perimeter and had a very satisfactory kill on the weeds and an ornamental pear tree that I hated!

I've had good luck with 2-4-D mixed fairly strong. Keeps the brush at the edge of the woods from encroaching on my yard. Last time I sprayed was at least 1 1/2 years ago and what i killed has still not grown back. Takes a week or so show its affects but works great once it gets started.

Get some Pathfinder II. The utility companies use it too keep the right of ways under the powerlines and along the railroads free of vegetation. Its also good to paint on the stumps of fresh cut trees to keep them from having sucker growth like on Gums and willows etc. Goats work too! lol

Get the straight up glyphosate. It's the chemical in roundup non-diluted, so you can mix it to whatever strength is required. Round up, even the super Roundup, are pretty weak solutions. Woody plants require a stronger mix. You can kill a tree with the straight stuff. Mix per directions and use a sprayer.

It's also MUCH cheaper than buying Roundup, and you can mix to the strength you need.

My local hardware store has 3 gallon jugs of it.

The 3 gallon jugs (or 30 gallon barrels) of gly are usually 41%. Roundup super concentrate is 50%.

41% gly is cheapest way out, but if you use it undiluted, expect a 20-24 month timeout of grass and such regrowth.

2,4-d Ester version should solve your problem, but be aware that it migrates in the soil and can harm nearby desirable growth.

I use ester on weedy stuff, and Crossbow diluted 6 to 1 on stumps and wild rose bushes.

Couple gallons of gas and a box of matches - cheap and effective but tends to draw attention from the neighbors.

Go to your local Farmer's Coop, and ask for Crossbow. It is a hardwood herbicide. Mix about 1 teaspoon per gallon of your Round Up mixture. It will kill anything Round Up misses.

Believe it or not, I burned it off in April of last year before the annual summer burn ban went into effect! But by July, I was bush-whacking again!!

I appreciate all the suggestions! I think I'll research and maybe try the 2-4-D or the Crossbow.

If it's Kudzu after you cut it put a couple of goats on it. They will eat the young new stuff but not the older vines and leaves.

Tordon 10K.... is a guaranteed kudzu and anything else killer. I think you need an applicators license for it though anymore. IIRC it gives like a 10 or 12 year kill time. Any vegetation is gonna die with this stuff. It comes in pelleted or granular form, and only needs to be broadcast around what you want to kill. It kills right down to the root tips.

Goats, they love browse and will eat it down to the nub. Plus cabrito (baby goat) is really tasty meat. I'd look for some Spanish goat nannies who are pregnant, buy some electric netting to keep them somewhat corralled where the stuff is. Eat the babies when they are ready and sell the nannies at an auction once the brush is cleared. Goats are the only thing that will get rid of browse.

FWIW it doesn't kill the poisonous weeds in our pasture but we did manage to denude a patch o grass and killed a couple of our apple trees!

The organic way

Goats are the only thing that will get rid of browse.

Not so!

Plant your area with Jerusalem artichokes, & come late summer or early fall, fence for a couple of pigs. While rooting for the artichoke tubers, they will also clean the area of all roots & vines. They will leave the ground tilled & fertilized altho not too level.

After the brush & vines are gone, you've got pork chops + any Jerusalem artichokes that volunteer can be eaten as a side dish :)

True, but the goats will eat the brush down then follow up with pigs is a really good idea.

Sounds like a BBQ plan to me, goats first with an appetizer of cabrito, then pigs and a big pork roast :-)
