...hey, ho, way to go, Ohio!

I wanted to share with you all a somewhat early 44 magnum I just bought from OH recently. It just came in this past Saturday. Its a 5 screw, 6.5in 44 magnum (pre 29), S153XXX. I don't have a letter yet. The gun is in beautiful shape. There is a small nick in the right grip panel, but I will live with that. The metal condition is fabulous, which I would say is 98%, very slight edge wear, with no holster wear that I can see. I'm still amazed I got this 44 because this is my second 5 screw 44 mag this year. I'm hoping this gun is also a first year example, but many S153XXX range guns shipped in 1957, so I will have to wait and see. The earliest ship date for that SN range that I found was 7-2-56, so there is a chance that it will end up being first year production. Crossing my fingers...Here she is:

No rebuild stampings, finish is all original. One nice thing about these early 44 mags is since many shooters bit off more than they could chew, so to speak, when they bought these, many are still in high condition today. This is fortunate for us collectors, because we all like guns with condition.

There really is no wear to speak of on the barrel. I'm glad no one carried this one, and whoever had it, stored it properly and took care of it. Many vintage guns aren't so lucky.

Here is the little nick in the right grip panel. I know for some of you, that would ruin it for you, but I figure that nick was the result of some botched bank robbery shootout in San Francisco in the 1970s ;)

Here is the factory letter I got a few months after getting the revolver.

I luckily have an extra black pebble grain case, that I got earlier this year. However, if it shipped after July, this case would be wrong because didn't the smooth case start appearing half way through 1956?

Unfortunately, I need the innards for this case...

That other 44 mag I got this year, S130937, which shipped 4-2-56, ended up getting a black pebble grain case some months back from a generous forum member. Thanks Clocks! Here is how it looks in its black pebble grain case:

Here is a shot of my early production 44 mag family thus far: top S130937, middle S153562 (the gun of this thread) and bottom a 4 screw 44 magnum (pre 29) S177XXX.

Nice, I like the grips, nicks and all. And you know what they say about .44 mags you can never have to many:)

That is a beautiful collection you have going there. I'm debating getting one myself.

BTW - the nick adds character. Like you, I would assume there is some interesting story to go along with it.

Jim:

Very nice family portrait!!!

A few months ago, I had most of my 44 collection out for some time out of the safe. I'm really a K-22 and 357 collector, but I was surprised to find that I too had "developed a thing" for the 44 Magnum.

Closer-ups of the pre-end of the 44's...

If I had known you would post a family photo, I wouldn't have even bothered showing my paltry collection.;)

Your 44 Mag collection is outstanding!:D:cool::) But your "thing" comment really resonated with me, as it aptly described the realization that dawned on me when I had them all out. With the exception of the engraved ones (which I actively sought out), the rest of the 44 Mags in the photo came to me here and there without a lot of conscious thought - they were just nice examples that I seemed to stumble upon, when there weren't any nice K-22s or 357's available. I keep a spreadsheet of my collection but was surprised how many 44 Mags had made their way into my safe...

The engraved pinto, is it Russ Smith?

Jim:

The pinto is an early Model marked 29 that shipped in October 1959. This iconic 44 has been owned by several members of this forum and it was factory engraved by Russ Smith. My addition to the package is the blue presentation case (a near perfect case obtained from a kind member of the forum) and a set of proper tools. It is a beauty that deserves a little more air time, so here are a couple of photos:

Is the 8 3/8 above the pinto a pre 29 or 29 no dash?

The long-tube, rather plane (not engraved) one above the Pinto is also an early model marked 29 that shipped in September 1959. The case is the relatively rare early blue fabric lined case. Here are a few closer up photos:

Jim...No. The revolver built for developing the 44 Magnum cartridge was described to me by Jack Behn who was given the revolver by C. G. Peterson who did the development. The revolver is a 1950 Target with a 4-inch barrel and chambered in 44 Magnum. It has serial number S121839. It was stolen from Mr. Behn in 1972 and never recovered. This revolver, as expected, is open on the books of S&W. Interestingly, Mr. Behn was an employee of Bill Ruger and received many fine early Flattop 44 Magnums. I met him at the Annual Meeting of the NRA in Kansas City in 2001 where he told me the story of S121839 and later provided me with a copy of the list of stolen guns he gave to the police in CT.
