Can Someone Explain to Me The Appeal of the .45 Colt

Well - as for ownership - if fills in that awkward gap between .44 Spl./Mag. and .454 Casull.

And, growing up as a young gun-geek worshipping the writings of Elmer, learned it was THE go-to big game woods revolver for many years. Ol' Elmer shot through a few Elk with the cartridge properly loaded.
While I've not had the chance to take any deer with my 25-5, I have done so with a little Winchester 16" Trapper in .45 Colt and she does a stand-up job.
 
I do see that several of you speak of the .45 long Colt.

Sorry, there is no such thing as a .45 Long Colt.

In 1873 you have had the .45 Colt. When the Smith and Wesson Schofield apeared it loaded a shorter version of the .45 Colt.
This is the .45 Schofield or .45 Smith and Wesson.
When the Schofield came in Army Service there was a bit of a problem.

A full lenght .45 Colt do not fit in the Schofield. That can give a serious problem when an angry indian charges at you.

The Frankford arsenal solved the problem to produce only the shorter .45 Schofield. So the problem was fixed.

You see the markings .45 LC a lot on Italian made replica's of the SAA or any other firearm Italian produced in .45 Colt.

The reason is easy. Italians copies everything even the mistakes.

So. .45 Colt is .45 Colt and .45 Schofield is .45 Schofield. You have also the British .450 but that is a complete other cartridge.

Thuer, Even the Colt Factory lists it as .45 LC(doesn't mean "Little Chicken". Long Colt is what it has become, live with it. Check out the factory web site.

You all are right on this whatever side you pick. .45 colt at first but then the .45 s&w, .45 acp, .455 and maybe a couple more. They started out saying ".45 long colt to differenciate the confusion.
How about the .22 remington jet? Smith puts ".22 magnum" on the barrel of the model 53 yet when you say .22 magnum a big part of the shooting world thinks you mean the .22 winchester magnum rim fire (.22 WMRF). It for sure aint!

Yes I do know that even Smith and Wesson put .45 long colt on their revolvers. That does not mean that the name of this cartridge is alright.
The name .45 long colt is very long in use. I do know that to.
In a book it is refered as the long cased colt.

But I still stick with it. The Original name is .45 Colt. Just looked at a 1978 Colt catalogue. The SAA is still in .45 colt in that catalogue.

.45 long colt is a populair name for the .45 colt. But it is still not right.
As I stated you can find .45 long colt on many, many firearms. But look on the antique period one's. There you can not find it.
Also in old guncatalogue it say,s .45 caliber or .45 colt.

Pleace find an historic evidence than I will surrender.

The ol clerk behind the counter of the hardware store don't give a hoot what no 'experts' book sez....

He just wants to know if the 45s you're wantin are the Long Colt, er Automatic Colt Pistol cartridges...

I guess it's a regional descrip of the cartridge...I heard it call that by all the ol hands that actual used it everyday.

I call it the Long Colt, out of respect for all the ol timers that that I have known, men that have carried the Long Colt and use it to good effect.

Anyways, my life experience didn't come out sum ol book sumwheres....I got my degree, whilst smellin gun smoke and throwin lead!

As I said. It is called .45 long colt for a long time.
Nothing wrong with that.
I wonder when this name is first in use.

All I stated is that it is from origin .45 Colt.

If you like to call it .45 long colt. Fine by me.

45 Short Colt
 
But that is what I am saying. The Frankford arsenal made the .45 Schofield for both Colt and Smith and Wesson Schofield.
It is not named .45 schofield but .45 governement.

It is due the public that the .45 colt is named .45 long colt.

Good thread...I've liked the .45 Colt for decades. I even know what people mean when they say .45 Long Colt, just like cartridges have cases, and sausages have casings, and magazines and clips aren't the same thing...but heck, I know what you are saying. Is it dinner or supper? I don't care either way if I'm hungry.

Now, back to firearms, shooting irons, hawglegs, what-have-you: the .45 Colt is a wonderful caliber to shoot and reload for. It is accurate, powerful, and makes a BIG HOLE! It comes in some exquisite hardware, and it oozes history. I'll use it for years to come.

Now I have to find me one of those 25-7 Model of 1989 versions.
 
If I had only one gun for all things, it probably wouldn't be a .45 Colt. If I had only one revolver for for home/self defense, it would be a .45 Colt. I saw .45 Colt on the shelves when that was the only pistol cartridge on the shelves. Even if you don't reload, any loading of it is substantial for defense. There's just something about that big cartridge with a big, honking, Keith-style SWC sticking out of it, that makes me smile. Find a Colt SAA with a 4 5/8" or 5 1/2" barrel and shoot it, and handle it. Try out it's natural pointing. Maybe you'll understand.

Potato, potato.....it's a big ol' round that can throw 300 grainers at 1300 fps and not break your wrist. Been known to shoot clean through bears, too!:D

Whatever ya calls it, I'm a big fan!
 
OK, I have read the article carefull now.

This is for me a complete suprise.

It is the same dimensions as the .45 Schofield.

For the same cartridge there are 4 names. .45 schofield, .45 Smith and Wesson, .45 governement and .45 colt not marked short Colt but of schofield size. But named short Colt.

Who knows the ways of name changes over the centuries? It started out as the .45 Colt, and for various reasons the "Long" got put in there to differentiate. As long as we all know what cartridge we are referring to, that is what matters.
