N Frame carriers, get your burly selves in here.

Here is my 657 3" .41 magnum in a Milt Sparks PMK...carries nicely just behind the hip.

Much depends on the job intended.
What advantage is gained from packing an N frame?
Well I would say accuracy, range penetration and power are the assets.
The old N frames served the Highway Patrols of out nation well in the past. In three and a half up to six inches im many calibers. Mostly .357 I think.
They were favored for use against barriers and what the 158 grain .357 would and could do. If in a situation where you are not able to take a long gun along I would opt to pack a 4 inch N since it would do its job at a greater range than most semi autos out there. Not that extended range defense use is very common but it could happen in a rural setting or even in urban America. Thoughts of the Texas Tower sniper come to mind. The officers had 38s and shotguns and the assign was pretty well out of range. Civilians grabbed the deer guns from their trucks and pinned the sniper down and saved some lives. A model 27 would have been handy or even a 29.
I like my Glock too but sometimes it won't serve the task at hand. Well maybe a 10mm could but I don't even know anyone carrying one today. I traded mine many years back. There were no concealment holsters available for it then. If they were it was a secrete.
If my wife ever packs her 4 inch nickle M 58 I will post it here. I will be giving it to her on her 41st birthday next April.

You tube "why cops dont like baggy clothes" i carry the x frame .500 in a shoulder rig in the woods with no weight complaints. I guess some people are weight sensitive?

I have carried a 3" 629 IWB when it was all I had to carry. I carried it in a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake. Really wasn't bad but only carry it hiking now that I have smaller and lighter options available.

I rotate several guns for EDC. With cool weather and appropriate garments, I've often carried a 4" M28, a 4" M25-5, and a M58.

It amazes me at the amount of people who talk about lighter weight is needed edc or you will not carry every day.
Percentage of usa citizens 20 and over that are over weight 69.2% through 2009-2010
Perhaps if people carried less fat they could carry more steel.

I carry the N-Frame more than any other handgun, usually a mountain gun, 329 PD or one of my 5". Concealed in a Kramer OWB horsehide pancake holster, heavy gun belt and suspenders by better-S-penders. The Kramer holds the gun tight against my hip and is easily concealed by a vest.
In Alaska while guiding I use a "thumb break flap holster" in the cross draw position. This keeps the gun handy to either hand, yet out of the way.
I think cylinder width of the N-Frame as my main deterrent to daily concealed carry. They just don't conceal as easily as a 1911 or my 642.
So if I'm in town and don't need the range and power of the N-Frame I'll carry something else.

Although I usually carry a Colt Commander I was out in Oregon and Idaho for a month this summer and just brought one handgun...a 4" 57.

Started off with a Kramer Horse hide IWB holster and later a DeSantis Speed Scabbard but after a few days went to carrying it the way I have always ended up...tucked in behind the left hip with butt forward...no holster.

Have been carrying guns that way since getting my first CC license in Connecticut in 1970. Everything from a 2" Model 60 to a 6.5" 29-2. The only gun I won't carry that way is one of the "Safe-Action" semis like a Glock or XD.

In very little time I just forget the gun is there...

My routine urban concealed carry gun is one of my 5" government size 1911s with a spare magazine. I sometimes conceal carry my 4" Colt Python for nostalgia with two speed loaders. My rural carry gun is either my Glock G20 SF 10mm or my FNH FNX-45T with two spare fifteen round magazines. My concealed carry gun for the woods is my 4" S&W 29-2 with two speed loaders. My open carry guns for the woods are my 6" Colt Trooper, 8 3/8" S&W 29-2, or my 8" Colt Anaconda with two speed loaders.

I'm sure cbr will disagree or at least find fault with a comment from an old fat man, but my experience has been that it is the guys over 6' tall and generally over 200-250 pounds who are more likely to carry full size, steel guns.

LoL. I do not find fault nor disagree you are likely right "most" probably are. Personally i am 5'10, 172lbs but i am sure i am a minority.
I just like big guns, they seem to fit my hands better which makes.them easier to shoot.

if anyone remembers what the old safariland shoulders holsters were like, I used a 4in. and a 6in. to carry n-frames back in the day. when wearing a coat both were invisible. 5'10 and 245lbs in those days. a couple of lbs. more now.

Back in the day, I used to carry my 25-2 (6 1/2") didn't even take the target grips off. Full moons in strong side speed loader carrier. Just to see if I could. I was a heck of a lot thinner then.
I tried my 5" 27 in a similar rig.
My buddy used to carry his 6" 28 on duty & off. He got busted on a lot when he first started carrying it... jokes about how long to clear leather? He had to carry it (uniform) in a high ride holster when everyone else was using drop loop holsters in order to sit in the patrol but he was just as fast to his first shot & was about the highest qualifying score.

One of the advantages to being a bigger guy. At 6'1"/250, a 4" Highway Patrolman on me is like a snub K-frame on a welter- or middleweight.

I have a model 58 with Fuzzy Farrant stocks with no palm swell that my buddy had made. He used to carry it in a upside down shoulder holster made by Safariland with a pouch for 2 speed loaders on the off side. When I carry the gun today I use a Desantis strong side belt holster with a good belt and never had trouble with the weight. I could be called burly as I'm 6' tall and weigh in at 275#.
p/s my favorite cc gun is my 642 in a Nemisis pocket holster.
