TEXAS

I went to Texas once, back in the late 70s, to Austin and San Antonio and down to the border at Eagle Pass. Jimmy, if you get into the hill country, you gotta go to Luckenbach. Not much there once you arrive (unless it's changed in the past 40 years:D) except an old wooden dance hall, and an old country store, but just knowing you're there is worth it. Willie and Waylon and the boys....:D

I usually say that I have been all over half of hell and all of Texas. They run together at several places and the border is not that well marked. Until recently I had actually been almost every where in Texas except Big Bend Country. Last Jan went down that away so now I have been all over Texas.
Favorite location? Probably around Ft Worth. That is after all where the West begins. Dallas is where you know- it disappears.

I challenge any Yankee to come down here and try your luck driving on our black ice. We just don't invest a lot in salt and snow plows, so you are pretty much on your own when the weather hits.

Us non-Yankees have problems there too. A few ago I came into Houston just after a blue norther blew through. I-10 was salted-sanded and not a problem. But when I turned off of I-10 to go to my brother's house it was Katie bar the Door. The world was covered with black ice.

Spend a winter driving up here and then I'll come on down and show you how its done. LOL. Montanans ain't Yankees though. Weren't around to get involved in the "Great Debate" But, next time your ready to succeed we will join you.

I dream of spending time in the great state of Montana! If I was not a 5th generation Texan, I would be there, sliding off the road!

Foreigners just don't realize how big the place is until they experience it.. I entertained a friend from New Zealand a few years back. We drove to Houston for the gun show. Houston has 6.5 million population; i think all New Zealand is about 4.5. He had fun at the gun show, but I think the long drive, miles and miles of it, inpressed him more.

Later I met a French couple at another Houston show and drove them back to El Paso. One day we stopped at the Alamo, and went through Fredericksburg. The Nimitz musuem is nice; (I think it needs a few more years and possibly a few more million $ would help), but it's still worth seeing. Spent the night at Junction. The next day we drove, and drove and drove. there's nothing, and lots of it, from Ozona to Van Horne. He had an international drivers license so I let him drive a while, and let her sit up by him. Both enjoyed it. But they were still quite glad to get into a house and stop watching the desert go by at 80 MPH.

I don't like cold and snow !
I don't like slow !
I don't like driving in a circle !
I don't like living where I cannot go somewhere I want to go !
I like driving !
I like all sorts of roads that give me choices !
I won't live in Alaska because the roads control you !
I like driving and not sliding !
I like going fast !
I like different choices of scenery !
I like different folks !
TEXIS--TEXAS, if you don't speak Texian.
You folks that don't live here--why do you complain about Texis---live where you like it.
Blessings

Jimmy,

The Mexican food is great there, especially where you are now.

Before you leave don't miss eating some outstanding Texas BBQ, especially the brisket and ribs. We have always enjoyed it at The County Line in Austin, and breakfast isn't the same without having a made-to-order breakfast taco at Rudy's! It's much different from BBQ in the South!

Enjoy your stay in The Great State of Texas!

Is Austin part of Texas again.

One of the best things about our state is the food. BBQ, Mexican or chicken fried steak. If you happen to find yourself halfway between Ft. Worth and Abilene on I-20 there is a little town named Strawn, not very big but the chicken fry at Mary's café is!! Hangs over a good inch or two all around the plate and comes with enough fries to feed an army. Welcome to Texas.

Jerry Jeff, Waylon, Willie, David Allen,Gary P, They all went to Texas and started the Texas revaluation, in Outlaw country...In the 70's and early 80's Nashville just didn't get it ......Lot of good music from those days and from the Texas music scene......Sort of miss it....Country has become so respectable they all look and sound alike....Times change not always for the best...JMO

That's the way the Chicken Fried Steaks are at the Little Red Barn Rest in San Antonio. Also, back when we had a few Floyds Restaurants in my area-they were akin to the Little Red Barn and Dirty's versions. Sadly--Floyds is NOTHING like they were 15 years ago. :(:mad:

BTW--for those not in the know--Dirty's is in Houston.

BTW, anyone here even been to Sneek, TX? and tried their Chicken Fried Bacon??? I dont remember the name of the Restaurant that makes nad sells it? but I imagine you can ask anyone fron the area and can find out easiy enough.

Made a little drive back in the 90s, from Houston to San Antonio. Ate at a place called Mia Tierra's (sp) in the market. It might be a tourist place but they served the best breakfast I have ever eaten. Took in a show up at the Gruene Hall in Gruene, (sp) Then over to Fredirck, past the YO ranch bypassed Austin and back to Houston.

Luv that Texas cookin.....We gonna need some brand new jeans.
