TEXAS

Made a little drive back in the 90s, from Houston to San Antonio. Ate at a place called Mia Tierra's (sp) in the market. It might be a tourist place but they served the best breakfast I have ever eaten. Took in a show up at the Gruene Hall in Gruene, (sp) Then over to Fredirck, past the YO ranch bypassed Austin and back to Houston.

Luv that Texas cookin.....We gonna need some brand new jeans.

Mi Tierra is kind of touristy, but still very dependable. I used to prefer Karam's, but they closed down sometime back. My folks like a place called La Posada Del Norte, & it is pretty good. They lost their lease some time ago, but rumor has it they will be back up & running, maybe around Thanksgiving. There's just a lot of excellent TexMex food in San Antonio!

Wife and I stopped in Luchenbach on our honeymoon about a dozen years Ago .Your mention brings back fond memories on a day when we really need them.

It's Snook not Sneek! Snook is just west of College Station. The restaurant is Sodolak's.

Thanks and, I need new glasses. ;):D

Btw, the only excuse can come up with for the wrong spelling is because a good friend of mine lives in Sneek--in the Netherlands. :-))

For Doughnuts, there is a place in Austin that serves doughnuts the size of seat cushins--I kid you not. They have been on at least two Food Channel shows, one being: Man vs Food.

The Czech Stop in West, Texas (Just north of Waco) is a delicious kolache and Czech bakery. Always super busy!
Round Rock Dounuts is the bomb
In Austin The Salt Lick and Rudy's for barbeque.

I've eaten at the Iron Works near the convention center. It's very good. One of the things I love about Texas is BBQ. I'm not huge on Tex Mex, but have had some tasty meals at Tex Mex restaurants.

I probably won't be in Austin until next May or June, but will have to try Rudy's or Salt Lick.

I've been in TX for 30+ years and they still treat me as an outsider here. The good news is, they're really friendly to outsiders. I hitched a ride here from eastern KY as an unemployed young guy with less than $500. in my pocket and a duffle bag. I got dropped off in downtown Houston at around midnight without a sole I knew for 1200 miles. I decided this was home in a very short time.

I met my bride of that 30+ years here, was married less than a year after arriving. We've raised two sons here and I'll be planted here among the Texas bluebonnets. I've traveled a lot in my lifetime but I've never been anywhere that felt more like I belonged.

One of the best things about our state is the food. BBQ, Mexican or chicken fried steak. If you happen to find yourself halfway between Ft. Worth and Abilene on I-20 there is a little town named Strawn, not very big but the chicken fry at Mary's café is!! Hangs over a good inch or two all around the plate and comes with enough fries to feed an army. Welcome to Texas.

Not to mention the Vietnamese,Thai,West Indian,Northan Chinese....

I've found people from the south to be friendly in general, even to Yankees. I've spent the most time in Texas, so have the most experience with those folks, but it extends to other states as well.

My wife mentioned to me tonight that she's ready to move to the south, she's had enough of the cold weather. We can't move just yet, but we can start making a plan. The question is where and Texas is high on my list.

Round Rock Doughnuts was the place I was thinking of. I just gained 3 pounds looking at that photo. :D Salt Lick is a great place but I never had a chance to try the other. Have you ever been to the Hilltop Cafe on Congress? I never had a bad meal there.

You will have to try CHUY'S on North Lamar, their Tex-Mex cant be beat. I ate there no less than 5 times a week. Not only great food, great service but, affordable too. Happy Hour food bar is great but in order to hope in getting some of that--is you BETTER get there at 4PM and no later than 4:30--or most likely all of that will be gone.
This one is the one I went to:

Tell your sister-in-law to whip up some cream gravy with well done sausage mixed in, now that is good eating!

If you are ever around Buda TX before 10 am weekday/10:30 weekend, stop at the McDonald's off service road of I-35, they have serve up pretty good biscuits with sausage gravy

Well you would think they would at least send some free samples....A gift card or something....Probably don't need any help, or they don't think they do.......We all need help..I have been on a Tex Mex kick since this darn thread......It is tough to get good Tex Mex here though we are getting a few true Mexician resturants as of the last five years...No really good pico...

Hate to sound like im rubbing it in but--their Pico is to die for. Oh and, last I heard, they were in at least 15 States. They dont expand more rapidly because they dont wish to become a corporation. I heard they open only 3 new restaurants per year--which sucks. I heard their requirements for opening a new store are--the city has to have at least 300,000 , has to also have a large College and Military population. However, I dont know if thats fact or not? just going on what i was told a few years ago. They were supposed to open one here in Corpus Christi about 2 years ago, but opened their first store in Florida.:(
