Did some research & found that there is a Chuy's in Oklahoma. Its in Norman, about half an hour away from me. I'd be up for trying it, but if I was to go for Mexican in Norman, it would have to be Tara Humara, my favorite Mexican place outside of Texas! The food & the service are excellent. The worst thing about the place is trying to get a table.

Give CHUYs a whirl, you will not regret doing so. Their Burritos for instance-are the size of a newborn baby--I kid you not. I get one and its = to three meals.

I learned about sit ups in the Marine Corp in the 50's. I also learned about a lot of things......One thing I didn't learn from my DI was about Tex Mex food. I sure learned about running, and following orders...Some how I never seemed to get enough to eat....Now I can afford to eat just about anything and my appitite has mellowed as I have.....BUT put me in front of a large plate of good Tex Mex food and I will do my share.........Funny thin g in 78 I was in central Mexico and didn't get real hot food there. The Tex Mex was better that along the Bay of San Carlos.....A lot of vanella tasting stuff in the dairy based food, not bad (not hot) and not Tex Mex....?????
I know what you mean, George! There's a place in San Antonio that my folks take me to whenever I'm there...great food. They have this mega plate(The Fiesta Platter?)that I can't resist. Its a cup of pinto bean soup to start, then a couple of enchiladas, rice & beans, a taco & a chalupa, a guacamole salad, plus all the tostadas & salsa, & tortillas you want before & during the meal. I tell myself before we go that I will NOT be ordering this extravaganza, because I know how I'll feel for two or three hours afterwards, but I apparently have the willpower of a fern, because by the time we arrive at the place, I'm already rationalizing. I tell myself to forgo the tortillas, tostadas & salsa before the mega platter is wheeled in...did I mention the strength of my willpower? So, at the end, I'm sitting there at the table, groaning, saying I'll never do it again, and as usual, my Dad is shaking his head.

I grew up on Tex-Mex in Houston, Texas and loved the stuff. In 1966 I was sent to Camp LeJeune, NC for a while, and they had just opened this Mexican food place there in Jacksonville. LOL Egads that was the worst stuff I have ever tasted. It must have been the first Mexican restaurant in that area ever. I don’t know where they got their cooking ideas. LOL
I only found two places to get really good Mexican food and that was Texas and California. Much as I hate to say anything good about California, they did have some outstanding Mexican food places. I was in Los Angeles for a few months in 1971 and there was a little carry out called Tito’s in Culver City that I ate at so many times they new me and what I was going to get. The only place I where I could say give me the usual.
Today my old worn out stomach just will not tolerate me indulging in such spicy food. I still eat beans and rice along but no more salsa or jalapenos, and what is Mexican food without either.
I grew up eating Texmex food in San Antonio, & stupidly assumed it was that good everywhere. Later in life I found that this definitely wasn't true. Have you ever had Mexican food in Maine? Hopefully things have gotten better, but when I was there in the nineties, it was baaaaaaaaad.
My stomach(knock on wood!)is holding up well. It may be because I started eating spicy food & hot sauces at a very early age, I don't know. If the day comes when I can't eat hot & spicy food, I don't know if life will be worth living!

It aint Mex food without the added extras. I use Salsa Verde on almost every thing In eat--just cant get enough. I just bought a case of it and only have 4 jars left after giving 4 jars away.

We were going to Calif back about 82--after taking what seemed like a Century crossing the border w/ New Mexico--the first restaurant we ate at was a Mex Restr, and was the lousiest I ever tried to eat.

I can honestly say that the best taco I've every eaten, came off a street cart in downtown San Antonio.
