I started this thread so as not to hijack another.

I came to church one morning and a friend of mine called me outside, once we got there he pulled out his brand new S&W 1911 to show it off. No warning, no clearing the weapon he just whips it out and says “See my new toy?” I have always been taught that this is incredibly unsafe behavior and I could really see someone seeing this happen and misconstruing the situation in a very bad way.
I have always been taught that unholstering your weapon for show and tell is generally not acceptable behavior. I have only done it one time and even that was in a closed locked room and quite a few people took me to task over it when I wrote about it here and on another forum. ( I would link to the thread but it was locked so I don't want to start the discussion again) That was enough for me to learn my lesson and now I certainly would never do it with someone I didn’t know well and even if I knew you not out side of my home.
So what is the general consensus on this?
