So I just got my mosin nagant and I going to be removing cosmoline tomorrow. My only questions is once I have removed all the cosmoline from the metal and am getting it all out of the stock. Will it be safe for me to leave out my metal parts for an extended period of time while the stock is sitting in the sun to seep the cosmoline out? Should I oil them just to be safe while leaving them out and how long can they be out for with nothing on them?

For cosmoline removal I bought those cheap plastic wallpaper troughs from Home Depot and used a hair dryer, mineral spirits and a paint brush. You'll need a bore brush for the bore too. I used the same on the stocks but didn't soak them in mineral spirits, just heat slightly, dipped and brushed.

Immediately upon getting the cosmoline off the metal and after it dries oil the metal up. Should be fine. The stock shouldn't leach much out if you use gentle heat and mineral spirits on it.

BTW I never did a Nagant but did several Albanian SKSs and they were a mess.

When I bought mine, I didn't even know any better. I just took it home and shot it.

Remember to clean it good after shooting, much of the the ammo is corrosive. I don't put tons of effort. I hose it brake clean or windex, then oil. There are surely plenty of more knowledgeable discussions.

I have wondered about cleaning up my wood. It has that heavy varneshed look. Though I also kinda like that look.

Trigger went limp on me. Had to tighen up the sear. I should have put some loctite on it when I did. I have read that this happens once in awhile.

I don't shoot mine alot, but I like. During the ammo shortages last year, I got a sardine can of ammo at fairly good price. Funny how you saw alot of the odd ball ammo for sale during the shortage. Tons of 41 mag.

Let us know how it goes. I may strip it down someday.

Keep the metal oiled. Nothing fancy, CLP or Hoppes will do.

Clean it as soon as you get home after shooting. The primers in those rounds create corrosive salts that will eat up your barrel if you leave it sit.

Some folks pour water down the barrel, but I just scrub the *bleep* out of it with Hoppes. Lots of patches. Get it good and soaked, leave it sit for a bit, hit it again and again. Works just fine.

No matter how you choose to clean it, just CLEAN it. That stuff is nasty and dirty.

Enjoy!
