Missouri , in general is being cast in a bad light, due to the happenings in Ferguson..
The majority of the non inner city dwellers are fun loving and caring people..
As to Ferguson, it is at the east side approach / exit of planes from Lambert field. Thus property values are less than stellar..
I won't go into the current event's in that area, other than to say, Missouri has a lot to offer outside the St Louis and Kansas City area..Down home folks who enjoy their lives and try to " Do unto others as they would have done to them"..
Don't let the actions of a few effect your views on MO...

Just my opinion from a lifelong resident...

Well spoken litenlarry

Although I live in Iowa, I travel into MO several days a week. 99.9% of all the people I deal with are great people. Mo is a great state to visit and see.
I really like the Flint Hills area west of Topeka. That is some kind of scenery. JA

Marshwheeling you are of course correct that the Flint Hills and Topeka are in Kansas. 13 hour day yesterday made me a little punchy when I wrote that. I was in Kansas on Monday. Back in Mo today. Columbia and KC, MO. I think they are both in Missouri. Maybe I better look at a map. :0

I don't doubt it one bit.
It's just that normal behavior isn't newsworthy.
Protesting is one thing... rioting/looting is another. They're not after justice (if an injustice even occurred), maybe a new pair of Nikes, cell phone, etc.

I grew up in Hazelwood, just west of Ferfuson on I-270. I still have a house in St. Charles County, just west of St. Louis County. There are parts of the city and county that no one would knowingly go alone at night, not even cops. That is probably true of any city.

This may be a little off subject. But since you can't turn on the tube without hearing about Missouri and the talking heads can't seem to agree maybe a Missouri resident can set things straight. Is it pronounced Missour-ie or Missour-ah?

Well that is a good question..Usually depends on what part of the state you are from, and especially your age. Southern Missouri generally use ah, Northern Missouri ie...Not necessarily set in stone...The under 40's I would imagine use ie except in south west Missouri..(Just a guess) During the summer there are so many vacationers it sometimes is hard to find a native..No complaints (bless their money bringing hearts) Branson is hard to find a native that isn't working or owning a attraction of one kind or another. I use ah as do most around Jeff City over 40. the new kids probably listen to their teachers that are not necessarily from Missouri..Columbia 35 miles north it is ie all the way...Darn Yankee's University of Missouri keeps trying to make us all liberal and educated...Take your pick..

Try being from New York.

You could copy-and-paste your whole statement and simply change a couple city names and you'd be spot-on. ;)

I will add this too. There are lots of solid citizens in Ferguson as well. I have many friends working toward peaceful ends in the area. A lot of arrests are not locals but professional out-of-town rioters with an ax to grind. Most locals want to clean up and get school started.

And it's Misour-ee...Missour-ee. Of course, ask somebody from a different neck of the woods and they say ruh. Don't trust'em.

That mess could have happened in any town, no need to worry. I have a sad feeling this sort of thing will be more common place in the coming years. I hope and pray I'm wrong.

I know to avoid East St. Louis, but St. Louis is a wonderful city to visit. Of course, a life-long Cards would probably think that, but there's a bunch of stuff to see in St. Louis that's either free or reasonably price. This could have occurred in several cities. Just happened to be St. Louis this time. My concern is that this type of thing could easily expand in today's environment.

Born in Rolla, spent the first 25 years there. Everyone I knew pronounced it ie.

IMOO it is Missour-ie.
Back when Missouri began there was no dictionary, everything was spelled phonetically based on how it sounded. If you read Lewis & Clarks journals they have the some words spelled differently since there were not spelling or pronunciation rules.

In their journals it was spelled with an I or E at the end. To me that is proof in writing from someone who lived in that era.

That isvtrue but NO ONE stays downtown after dark unless they are leaving ASAP after a ballgame. Washington Ave? MLK Drive? No thanks!

I love Missouri. Been an Illinois resident all my life but living 30 minutes from St Louis is great. The state has so much to offer...especially the Cabela's in Hazelwood!
