Preparing your 2014 tax return may not yet be on your radar screen, but when it is, there's some important information that you need to know. The word is already "on the street" that the IRS budget has been cut by about 11%, so they have announced that they will be doing less with less. They are estimating that less than 50% of the taxpayer calls will eventually be able to talk with some one to have their tax questions answered. In a nutshell, we're on our own now, out in "bad guy territory"!

While there are many choices for tax preparation software, the top three are 1) TurboTax, 2) H&R Block, and 3) TaxAct. Unfortunately, in comparison with many past years, one of these has changed horses on us in mid-stream!

A consultant in Missouri has explained it all pretty well:

"the boxed software/download version of TurboTax Deluxe + State for 2014 lists for the same $69.99 as did the 2013 version (you can currently buy the 2014 version for $59.99 on the TurboTax site and $49.97 on Amazon). But you can no longer use Deluxe to electronically file a Schedule D , for capital gains and losses; Schedule C, for profit and loss from a sole proprietorship business; Schedule E, for rental real estate, royalties and distributions from partnerships; or Schedule F, for farm income. While you can report dividends and mutual fund capital gain distributions through Deluxe, investors who sold any stock or assets need to trade up to Quicken Premier (list $99.99, selling for $89.99 through TurboTax's site and $79.97 on Amazon) to E-file. For a sole proprietorship with more than $100 of deductions in certain categories, even Premier won't do. To E-file, you'll need Quicken Home & Business (lists at $109.99, selling for $99.99 on TurboTax and $89.97 on Amazon).

Yes, you've guessed it already. It's not about "customer satisfaction", it's all about realizing more profits on the same products.

We now have at least two options, after we determine exactly which forms that we'll actually need and whether they are available in the product that we plan to buy:

Option 1 - Continue to use the same product. If it's TurboTax, you may be required to pay more for the same forms and filing;

Option 2 - Use another product. If so, be sure that it has ALL of the forms that you will need, and that you can easily convert your 2013 TurboTax data in to the 2014 version, unless you want to do it all manually, which I never recommend.

Tax return accuracy is extremely important. I'd never buy the least expensive product, if it was not the most accurate. I have no desire to explain my tax return errors to an examiner!!

I hope that this information is helpful to you. I'll also do my best to answer any PMs.

Poor IRS, 11% wow!

In the real business world we struggle every quarter to hit our goals.

Increased raw materials cost, raises, insurance increases.

We strive every year to find ways to save money in our designs, our logistics, our manufacturing, our packaging.

I'm sure they could streamline and easily make up that 11%.

I have used HR Block

I wouldn't attempt it on my own with Turbotax.

Thanks for the info. A buddy of mine is not using Turbotax this year for this reason.

Article Update:

This new policy is a very dynamic situation that can change any day, especially if the media come to our defense and start pummeling away at the problem, along with millions of highly-irritated taxpayers.

If you read the article, you do have a few more options:

Dissatisfied customers do have options, however. One is to call Intuit (at 800-445-1875, from 8 AM to 8 PM EST) and demand satisfaction. Meighan assured Forbes that every agent at that number "has discretion to do what's necessary" to keep a customer— meaning, he says, they will give customers a free upgrade if they demand it, or a discounted one if that's enough to keep them. (So, if you call, threaten to jump ship.) Note - if this will work for you, move out smartly before they change their policies!

Alternately, those who don't like kvetching or don't want to pay for Premier in future years, can switch—at little expense or for free—from market leader TurboTax to H&R Block software or to TaxAct. (Last year, 28 million returns were E-filed using TurboTax, compared with 7 million for each of the other two major players.)

Personally and professionally, I'd prefer to see them have their pee-pee hammered, big time, so hard that they'll never, ever consider trying to pull this dumb stunt again on their customers.

I agree with Steely Dan - 100%. They have no clue about the huge financial benefits of Six Sigma and TQM, but I sure do!

Thanks for the info!

I used the H&R Block online services, and recently finished filing my return.

Quick, clear and simple, and files my state tax return as well...

Looking for my direct deposit to hit within 21 days, and I'll be shopping for an S&W 340 M&P!!

I have used TURBOTAX forever. This could be the year I jump ship.
The lower IRS budget will most likely result in fewer audits.
Asking the IRS for help is like a chicken asking Col. Sanders to send him to camp.
The IRS' job is to collect money.

I've never used H&R Block because it scares me. I met a person that worked for Block a few years ago. I knew this person somewhat from her permanent job. I didn't think she performed her job very well and I wouldn't have trusted her to do anything related to finance. These people do get some training but, since I don't know how much training they get, I'm not one to put much trust in them.

I've used Turbo Tax in the past and it's worked for me. The only mistakes that I've experienced were mine. I'd advise anyone who asked to make sure your financial records are complete and accurate or whatever you input will be wrong.

Why doesn't the IRS just shift 11% of those who's job it is to harass "certain people" and have them do their real job during the tax season. Then they can go back to denying tax exempt status to those certain people while granting it to others who they agree with just like they were ordered to do.

I will probably still use TT... I have a simple return with a single W4 and a 1099 misc. I think most years it's been $30 to file.

I use https://www.freefilefillableforms.com

I refuse to purchase a product to help me pay a tax. That's ridiculous.

We don't buy Turbotax or other to 'help me pay a tax.'
We buy them to help us maneuver through the complexity of the tax rules and forms.
The interlocking nature of the tax forms make it difficult to accurately
Prepare a complicated tax return.
The Schedule D and its sub forms have gotten especially complicated.

Like yourself, every year I order my necessary forms from the IRS and file without any assistance, they love sending me "FORM 1040 ES FORM ESTIMATED TAX FOR INDIVIDUALS";)

Intuit Offering PARTIAL TurboTax Upgrade Rebates

TurboTax Deluxe(BOSTON – January 22, 2015) – Following a public outcry from regular TurboTax Deluxe users who learned that the popular tax preparation software's maker had stripped the program of key functionality this year, Intuit today apologized and somewhat reversed course by offering a $25 rebate to purchasers to partially cover the cost of having to upgrade to a more expensive version.

My tax returns for some years are somewhat involved but I have done them every year with a calculator and the IRS provided instruction manual.

Many people who use computer programs to generate their tax returns probably do not fully understand what they are doing. If your returns are too complicated for you to do yourself, you are probably better off having a CPA do them.

I donated to Judicial Watch again this year.... Do the budget cuts reduce my risk of getting audited again?
