Pete Rose

Pete was a great player, but he ain't even in the top ten "greatest ever."
Maybe not in the top 20. That is still some fast company.

Baseball has always, since the Black Sox Scandal, pretty much had
the death penalty for being involved in gambling. Pete knew that, and
he was apparently so arrogant he believed the rules did
not apply to him. I read somewhere some years back
that one of the main reasons Pete wasn't in the HoF was that
his contemporaries didn' want him there. He wasn't really
Loved by some of his teammates and opponents.

I watched him play in the minor leagues in Macon, Georgia
in the early '60s.

Years ago when I was a turboprop pilot, Pete and the then current Mrs. Rose (about half his age) boarded the plane. This was a flight from Cleveland and most people on board knew who he was. He was cordial and friendly to everyone but didn't sign autographs, even by then he had learned that people would pay for his autograph.

After they took their seats and the flight began, Mrs Rose bought out a deck of cards and they started playing poker with each other.

Yes, they brought out chips to play with.

True story. Bill S

A lot of people are so quick to forgive steroids use and look the other way.Rose always bet his team would win, nothing wrong with that.

I don't think he should be let off the hook at all. In fact, I think all the other rule breakers should be held as accountable as Rose has been, even if that means kick half of them out of the league. Words like honor, integrity, and responsibility used to have meaning.

Didn't they just recently catch him lying about something else? Thought I heard something. Anybody?

Yeah it was in the news that his bookies records were unsealed. It was discovered that he bet on his team while he was a player playing in the same game. He always denied that he bet while he was playing. He has lied repeatedly and now the truth has come out.

My thoughts are that as a player he was pretty good. But there was a major rule about gambling that he knew about and went ahead and broke. He deserves to be banished for life. That was the penalty back then and he knew it when he bet.

Now should he be put in the HOF? I say yes but only after he dies. He should not benefit from the HOF while he is alive. There should also be a notation on his records with details about his banishment. I feel that the dopers that are in the HOF should also have a notation as well detailing their crimes.

These are my thoughts and opinion. I am sure some of you will disagree.

Like him or not, the best player to ever put on a uniform is not in the Hall of Fame.

You are forgetting Babe Ruth and Willie Mays and Hank Aaron and Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle And Stan Musial and Mike Schmidt and a bunch of old timers from the 30s and 40s whose spikes Pete couldn't come anywhere near filling. That ain't even counting pitchers. Not counting the recent bunch of steroid dopers, nor some current people like Jeter. Heck, Petey wasn't even the best player on the Big Red Machine. That would have been the greatest all-round catcher of all-time, Johnny Bench.

Keepimg it simple -- personal responsibility

People are responsible for their actions. There is a rule about betting on baseball games as a baseball player. Pete bet, Pete pays the consequences. Or is he just getting his life turned around and deserves a second chance?

NO -- never !

He lied!!

I used to think he deserved the HOF. But no more. He lied for YEARS!!

Everybody makes mistakes. And they should pay for those mistakes. But when you lie you deserve even more punishment.

Nope. Sorry.

Just a hillbilly from the western slums of Cincinnati. Watched him, his wife and kids fooling around, getting drunk, puking and passing out all over town. Of course that means that I was in the same establishments, but at least I left under my own steam. Hell of a baseball player, no brains, no class in the whole bunch. Could not care less. What does getting back into baseball mean at this point for Rose?

Pete was a great player, but he ain't even in the top ten "greatest ever."
Sorry, but he is.

There are only a few records that really mean anything when it comes to baseball; strike outs, home runs, RBIs, lifetime batting average and hits. With 4,256 hits he is the clear all-time hits leader. This point is not disputable and may never be broken. The next closest active player is almost 1,000 hits away.

Yeah, he may not be in the top 10 for all around greatest players, but he is definitely in the top 10 for important achievements.

What does getting back into baseball mean at this point for Rose?
The same thing it has always meant to him; money.

It's simple, he holds the record for most hits. That should put him in the hall, period. They can still bar him from making any money on baseball, but they can't deny what he did as a player. Put him in the hall for his record. Don't give him any fan fare, no ceremony, no TV spot. Just put his name at the top of the hits list. Still ban him for life from making any money on baseball.

We constantly ask for forgiveness for our actions. Even if these actions actually hurt others, but stop short of extending the same to others.

I guess I'm confused. Is there a sliding forgiveness barometer in play here? If you really feel offended by Pete Rose and in your heart think he is somehow unworthy of forgiveness then when do the rules of compassion apply? In the NFL? In Washington? In your house of worship? In the courtroom? At the dinner table? In the mirror?

I get the "he knew the rules" debate, but haven't we given a mulligan to folks who have done much worse? I don't think Rose betting on his team to win had any effect on his play or the outcome of the games involved.

Are you going to deny Tom Brady entry into the NFL HoF for example? Should he be banned for life? Some might argue that he cheated for an unfair advantage and his actions hurt more people than did Mr. Rose's.

Pete Rose was one of the best players to ever suit up and should be inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame today with an (*) next to his name and a footnote that states "This honor is 25 years too late due to gross lunacy and lack of compassion by the league".

I don't deny his numbers. He did knowingly break rules with severe consequences. I also believe all numbers reached through chemical means should be erased.

As I read through many of the responses I see a trend of comparing his bad behavior to other bad behavior. Do we do that with our kids? OK Johny it is OK that you mouthed off to the teacher and didn't do your homework because Mr. Smith's son punched the teacher out so you are no so bad and the teacher must have deserved it.

Wrong is wrong and it doesn't matter who and when. The standard doesn't change. People like to think it does but it often comes down to a matter of proof. Seems that many of steroid group are no getting consideration for the hall and they have not all been proven guilty. They may be but the fact is what is your standard and are you willing to adjust it anytime you want to? Wrong is wrong, a lie is a lie, cheating is cheating and that is the standard. Don't excuse it by pointing out other bad behavior.
