Hello all My name is jim and i am new to your site. I am looking for information on a revolver i bought at a estate sale. Here is what i know it is a Smith & Wesson model 27-2 .357 magnum. It has a 3 1/2 inch barrel and the serial number is S298144. the gun came in the original box and appears to have never been fired. I would like to know what year it is and is it a rare gun because it hasn't been used. Thank you for any information you can supply me with.

Dates from 1967-8. A nice gun in a desireable barrel length. I doubt strongly that it is unfired - one doesn't go to the trouble of changing out the stocks if they don't intend to use it. The original stocks were Magnas and would have been numbered to the gun. The stocks pictured on the gun appear to be Herrett Jordan Troopers. 27's are bringing premium dollars - depending on condition (which in the photos appears excellent) and geography, I'd estimate a value of $850 - $1200.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Thank you for the info. I guess i got a good deal on this one. I don't know if this gun was ever used or not but i cannot find a mark anywhere on it to say it was. The barrel and chambers have no marks to even suggest that there was ever any ammo loaded in it. If it was shot somebody did a heck of a job cleaning it. Don't know weather to shoot it or hang on to it.

I made an offer of $450.00 and got it.

I need to find out where you all keep finding these sales. You got one heck of a deal on that gun! I can't tell you how jealous I am. N frame 357 magnums are my favorite and you got one beautiful example! It does seem to show some use to me, just from the faint turn line on the cylinder. A collector may choose to leave it unfired. In my opinion, I don't see much reason to buy a gun and not shoot it. I might not shoot that one as much as one in a lesser quality, but it would still see some range time. Congrats on the purchase!

I have always wanted one of these and i just happened to be at the right place at the right time. I will probably shoot it a little bit before i make a decision on what to do with it. I guess i will have to find another one now. This is one addicting hobby. It's like a good potato chip can't just have one.

Well I was talking to the guy who helped sell the gun to me last week and I asked him if he found any hand grips for a pistol said he was not sure but would get back to me. Friday I get a call wants me to stop by. So I go over there and he gives me the original grips for the gun I bought.

Someday something like this will happen to me... great find OP, one of my favorite Smith configurations. Shoot it, then don't let it go!
