Spent a miserable afternoon putting in 1/2" gas line for a lady's
new gas range. They had bought the pipe and fittings from a
home improvement store, Busy Beaver. It took me a bucket full
of 90s to make the run. Put joint of pipe in vise, cut it to length
with Rigid cutter, no problem. Dressed end of pipe and slid on
Thread die, it wouldn't grab. Had to take grinder and put shallow
taper on each piece I threaded. Die would cut easy, then hard, ect on same portion. Had to keep backing of every rev to clean
out die. Had to run to local hardware to get a flex. Told them
about pipe. They have power threading outfit. They said that they
refuse to thread Chinese pipe on their machine because of broken
teeth in their dies. When loading up to quit I noticed pipe was
slightly out of round and not uniform thickness in walls. That will
be my last job with Commie Pipe.

Ditto on the quality of Chinese pipe. If I am in a bind & absolutely cannot do without new pipe on the weekends, I will go to the big box store, but I am careful to sort thru the stock for pipe made in either Mexico or India - never China. Good luck finding US made pipe in any of the national chain stores.

I was running a gas line for a friend and had same problem, I didn't think to look at where the pipe was made. I'll be refusing Chinese in the future! By the way this was from "Do it Best" hardware store. Ivan

we were setting up a solar hot water heater the whole kit came together. My plumber said mark go buy 4 quater turn valves . i told him we got them right here he told me they were going to leak, i said use them . oh we put it together and 3 of the 4 leaked learned my lesson . buy the good stuff

When the US pipe manufactures shut down, I had to buy import pipe. Usually 5" and larger. When cutting with torch or welding 2 pieces together, the pipe would often blow a large hole in itself. I assumed it was recycled metal and was hitting imperfection. Total junk. I buy next to nothing that does not have a made in USA label. Some products are no longer made her, and imports are the only option. A large mine shut down here locally and the buildings were removed and sold overseas as scrap.

China is the new Japan of the 60's - nothing but junk!
That's a love hate circle. China can make whatever you want. Be it junk or quality. But it is known for making what the company wants, which is to sell a lot and the only way to do that is cheap.

You can find fault with the Chinese that way but there is one good thing that came out of China......the food. I'm a fan and remember going to China Town in Philadelphia. One of my favorite places to go.

I refuse to eat Chinese Food. Dark meat is dog white meat is cat..The rest is pig feed

When I worked in industry......

Nearly everything is made in China, Mexico or Pakistan. We had problems with out of spec pipe and tubing, one particular episode was a very high pressure hydrogenation plant. The tubing actually BURST in an extremely hazardous operation. Pipe fitting look like they were cast in a hole in the ground, and they don't do ANY finish work at all, just bore them and tap the pipe threads into them. They look like a lump of metal rather than a pipe fitting, but it is CHEAP. Failure, though could have dire repercussions.

Think, hot liquids, flammable gases, acids, steam and a host of other dangerous things. You don't want somebody to be in the vicinity In case something breaks.

I installed a gas dryer for a friend recently.

Needed a brass reduction nipple for the gas line. Went to OSH, got a couple off the rack.

Returned and after taping, tightened snug. Gas leak. Snugged a tiny bit more and the threads stripped out.

Went through three more of them, same result.

Got another gas valve 3/4" to 1/2" for the reduction (made in Italy of actual brass) and all was well.

Lost over an hour on that. Unnecessary waste of time.

The Bay Bridge in S.F. is also made largely with Chinese materials and is already showing signs of rapid deterioration and failure due to poor materials.

I just bought a rather expensive French Laguiole knife with the body (not the blade) made of steel from the Golden Gate Bridge. Hope it doesn't fall apart too.

You guys better be careful, you've awaken the SilverBack!

People can complain about Chinese goods all they want but it is American corporations that have brought them to us because of corporate greed, plain and simple. Something tells me that might get me dinged.......
