Hello. I bought this off of Gun Broker. The seller was nice enough to allow me to place a deposit in early November and promise to pay it off at Christmas.

I wanted either a model 64 or a model 10. The more I researched I decided I would go with a classic 10 and began to narrow down a pinned model and then decided I preferred the logo on the side plate which led me to a model 10-6.

When I placed my down-payment, the seller said that the gun came with a holster and that it was a police trade-in. I thought eh,.. the holster will be a throw-away. I was happy I was wrong.

The only weird thing is the serial number. It has a number 2 before the D and followed by 5 numbers. I looked all over for serial number pics for these model 10's and cannot find a single one with a number before the letter. It looks like the same font.

I know it's risky to buy a revolver or any used gun on-line but so far I think I struck gold! Timing is good, finish is maybe 85%, and it appears to have been carried a lot and shot little! There is mainly one portion of the cylinder that shows the most wear so that tells me this gun saw the inside of this holster with the same side of the cylinder most of the time.

But with a 2 prior to the letter D on the serial number?? Anyone have any input on this type of serial number?

They started the 1Dxxxxx in 1968 and went to 2Dxxxxx in 1977 and kept on going to account for running out of numbers. Right up to 30Dxxxxx. Nice Model 10 and holster by the way. Fire away!

A minor correction: They ended the C and started the D in 1967, and went with Dx until they hit D999999 in 1977. That's when 2Dx started. There was no 1Dx.

Thanks! I will certainly enjoy this gun. This is a pay-back to me since I needed to sell off a model 15 several years ago.

I plan to take it to the range tomorrow. Bought 150 rnds Winchester White Box to start.

So my model 10 may have been made in 1977. Or would the serial the number 2D13387 place it earlier? 1977 was the year I graduated high school!

I may pay Smith and Wesson for the history of when it was made, where it was sold to, what state, etc. All I know is that it was sold to me by a Gunbroker seller from Florida. What does S&W charge for that these days?

I believe there was on the stainless, fixed sight guns - the Models 64 and 65. I believe they ran from 1976-1980.

Aha. One never stops learning here :) .

At least based on my reference materials 1977 started the 2D and ended with 2D80000, so 2D13387 would be within that year with reasonable certainty.

A factory letter costs $50.

You pretty much now know when it was made. Since yours is a police trade-in, you may get lucky and find out it was shipped directly to a police department. Otherwise, you may only find out it was shipped to a wholesaler.

If it was a police trade-in (sometimes sellers get bad information or just make things up), it would have been professionally maintained and should be in top condition.

Well, it needed to be cleaned and oiled but not due to being fire. It looked like it was not fired much at all. Like I said, the cylinder had wear on one side only. Mechanically, its great.

Looking forward to putting a few rounds down range tomorrow!

I may throw the dice with the history. $50.00 isn't too bad.
