visit to Doctor

Dr Appointment

"I've got so many guns in the house I designed my house around them. And you should see my new back yard shed Doc. I've got built in racks for my RPGs, mortars, and my 50 cal. with tri-pod":p:D

I regard that question with suspicion as the same form attempts to ascertain your overall mental health in two or three questions. Those lines of questioning intersect dangerously. They pop the recreational drugs and how much you drink on those forms, too. You're a subpoena away from being mincemeat in court.

This is a point that every gun owner needs to be aware of. Because I'm on blood pressure meds I see my doctor every 3 months and every single time have to fill out the same questionnaire. On there are questions about using drugs, alcohol, and mental state such as depression, anxiety, or panic attacks. I would urge everyone to think carefully about how you answer, because those answers may end up being entered into the NICS database.

BTW, my doctor knows I carry and only asks I don't carry into his facility. Because a DPD Cop carried into an appointment and left his loaded handgun on the exam bench when he went to get weighted. I'll also note that my doctor has a Michigan CPL as did his student/intern.

My doctor is an avid gun collector. I've never seen any such survey/questionnaire in his office. The last question he asked me about anything gun-related was "What do you think of Remington's V3 shotgun?"

On my last visit to the VA doctor for a checkup I asked to have my lead level tested.
So, I brought up the subject shooting and casting.
After talking a bit, I offered to take the doc and her husband to the range for some basic safety training and basic shooting instruction.

My 2nd to last eye doctor, not so good when I was trying to get glasses focused at front sight range.
I basically told her I was paying her to help me get glasses and not for her political opinion.
I have since found a firearms friendly eye doctor.

I've had the same family doctor for 40 years.. The first 5 minutes of the visit is usually asking how the family is doing ,, what I'm driving ,, do I still ride my motorcycle,, etc.

If he asked me that question, I would ask, Why ?? And tell him it's none of his damn business !!!

A few years ago I had my car insurance agent ask, if I had any one living with me over the age of 16 and/ or with a drivers license. I told him it was none of this damn business. I said my insurance cover me & my wife , right ? That we were the only ones that drove my car..
Ins. Agent: But, I need to know if anyone else lives with you over 16.. Again told him it was none of his business. He said, if I didn't answer they might cancel my insurance.. I told him , sounded like it was time for me to look for another insurance agent..

Actually, it was just me & the wife and no one else. But still it wasn't any of his business ! And I now have a different insurance. ( still have no idea what that was all about ?? )

My understanding is that doctors are asking this question as part of their requirement to be eligible for reimbursement for Federal programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, etc.
So in other words, the information is not confidential and will be shared with the Federal Government and anybody they choose to share it with.
I doubt that your doctor has any interest on his own regarding whether or not you have a gun in the house.

The nurse at our doctor's office said she had to update our records and along with other questions, asked if we wore our seat belts. I laughed and asked what that was about. She said there was also a question about owning guns but Doc told her that she was not asking his patients if they owned guns. My kind of doctor.

I think if I were asked by another doctor, I would say no. Any other answer or lack of answer might make him put a Yes down. Who knows if they are turning this information in to someone.

Not a requirement for federal money by any health program. Now reporting of mental health issues will be required by EO
This doctor is the person you trust to take videos of your colon and test your prostate. That should make you friendly. You trust them to injects poisons into you, to scan you with high levels of radiation, to make life or death decisions. They may have to check you for lead levels, they may have to sew you up after a mistake with a gun. With the exception now of mental health issues, doctors don't report guns to the govt. Knowing you have a gun lets them know what to expect. My clinic stopped asking.

My retirement health benefit is an HMO, I've had the same doc for a few years and have never been asked this question. He knows my background and I have an appointment tomorrow morning. If asked I'm probably going to say no.

Since everyone these days is so worried about being politically correct and using "lawyer speak" to twist words and their meaning my response would be, "no". See, when it gets to that point I will start to call my firearms, "tools", since that's what they technically are. And as far as I know there aren't any laws preventing me from owning, buying, or selling my own tools.

well those who answered no its in my pocket or some other answer implying you have it on you in Illinois can get you arrested if the doctor called police .. Doctor offices and medical buildings are off limits while carrying !!

I've never been asked about a gun and I just changed doctors because mine retired .. but would reply it has nothing to do with my medical needs and wouldn't answer ..

Again why all the snarky answers? Your Dr isn't a cop and cannot report the info you give. Firearms are relevant to several medical conditions, primarily public saftey and suicide. Don't assume your Dr is anti-firearms. Be happy you've got a doc who is thourogh. I'd say answer honestly just as you should about smoking, sex and everything else. IF you. Don't trust the dr get another but this single question ought not to be the basis of loss of trust.

My medieval barber knows I own guns and said, "as long as you don't start bringing your Chuck Norris sock puppets in for check ups, I won't ask about you guns".

I gave my orthopedic doctor (he's Chinese) a Bruce Lee sock puppet for Christmas year before last. He seemed quite pleased.

My understanding is, if you are using medacare or medaide your Dr. is required to ask about firearms in the house. I've never been asked about firearms by my Dr. I will be seeing a new one next month, and it will be interesting to see if he asks.

If asked I think I'll give him the old and very true line. "There are only two people in the whole world you never lie to. Your attorney and your doctor." then I'll just smile at him.
