Home defense-don't fight if you don't have to

I pick a pistol based on I don't even know. Whatever happens to hit me that morning when I look in the safe . . .

Just a thought

Pick your carry weapon with the belief that you're able to put the max number of rounds on target in the shortest amount of time with it compared to the others you own.

I shoot a 1911 very well but it's not something I want to carry.

I like my tuned Sig P938 9mm and my Ruger SR22 with mini mags

They fit in my pocket and I can get it out and empty a mag on target very quickly.

No. I am confident of my ability to put two or three where they need to be with any of the pistols I choose to carry. Some people way overthink this . . .

Had an interesting talk with instructors of two different classes I took. One instructor is a proponent of shouting commands (I'm armed and prepared to defend myself, leave my house now, etc..). The other teaches NOT to give away your location in such a way; they are in YOUR house uninvited. I adhere to the second philosophy, and an intruder in my house won't be given ANY advantages by me.

Right.

General information offered to the general public is generally worthy. But it isn't always the best to apply to an infinite number of possible "what ifs" that a person may be confronted with. On the other hand, some folks don't have the sense God gave a goat. So mindlessly following whatever words run from the mouth of an instructor may be the best bet for them.

That had not occurred to me. It would seem logical to many that breaching one or more locked doors does not qualify an intruder for the courtesy of a warning and a verbal request to leave as well as notification of the resident's position in the home.

Um not concerned. Bad guys, tigers, lions, leopards oh my.....My Caucasian Mountain dog will do them all

A 250# dog that has no sense of pain and will take on a locomotive. ...that's a friend. If you think pitt bulls are mean and nasty you haven't seen a Caucasian Mountain dog.

I'm a dog lover, no doubt, and those are some of the most beautiful dogs I've ever seen. But, I have to tell ya, I will never complain again about being a pooper scooper (duty assigned to me by my better half) for our two Yorkies again. Man, you'd have to follow these guys around with a backhoe...holy ****! And I mean that literally :)

In my case calling the police will be done after the fact. I live in a very small town with a part time police force. In the past ten years I have had to call the police twice. First time because someone was breaking into the house next door and the second time was when my car was vandalized. The first time the police showed up three hours later and in the second case it was the next day. So I have my gun at hand a plan in place and maybe if I have to shoot someone the police may move a bit faster,

The simplest solution to me was just to put it on my hip. Problem solved!;)

+1 This was my resolution as well. I used to have several pistols hidden/locked around the house. I read/watched too many things to ignore the increase of "home-invasions" in our country. My doors and windows are always locked, but it would only take about the same time to smash through the slider and rush me as I could gather my wits, run to and open a lockbox to get my pistol. The best solution, was to just carry everywhere (except the shower and bed)! The right combination of gun and equipment is as comfortable as my dingy old t-shirt. I haven't regretted it one day.

Do you seriously carry an SR22? Or is that in conjunction with another firearm?

Nope,I carry it all by it's lonesome. Here in Texas it's warm/hot a good part of the year so shorts and t-shirts are the uniform of the day with little cloth available for consealment. My pocket is a best option.

11 shots on target in a few seconds with confidence in my ability and the weapon functioning properly.

Don't underestimate the 22lr.It's not something that should be dismissed as a carry piece as opposed to a .25 or .32 that may not make it through a winter jacket.

Many people that are shot don't give up or fall down right away.

Assailants that have grown up in a violent environment where stabbing and shootings are an every day occurrence don't go into shock like a person that has not seen much violence and blood.

I saw an armed robber hit with 3 loads of 00 buck make it out the door and half way down the block before dropping his weapon and falling to the ground.

IMO there's no reason for heavy artillery when choosing a carry gun.A nightstand weapon is a different matter but still no reason to overpower.Getting 5/6 wadcutters on target before recovering from 1 357mag round....which is the better choice is always up to you and your ability.

You need to set up a speaker on a tree outside with a police siren feed. I've heard that if you volunteer to confront a perp using your gun, and hang up on 911, they tend to prioritize it.
EDIT, I was not suggesting engaging the neighbor, just that the 911 operator thinking you might would get the cops there quickly. 3 hours for an active burglary, that is something,

One more thing to ponder regarding calling 911 prior to engagement is to understand that the call is being recorded. Someone not used to high stress situations may say something that could potentially work against you.

Food for thought.

The police have neither the legal duty nor the physical ability to protect me as an individual from immediate danger and I have no expectation that they will.

For me calling the police is purely an administrative measure intended to anoint me as the OFFICIAL victim. The odds are overwhelming that the issue will have been decided long before they show up.

A lot of interesting posts here. When I think about home defense, the police are really not a part of that. My first reaction is to defend. Same for my wife.

I doubt that either she or I will use one good hand to call 911 and be distracted from the event at hand...

Of course that call will be made but certainly not in the heat of the moment. Just seems like common sense to me. ;)

Not fighting isn't even an option, it is off my list.

My plan is, I am going to the kitchen drawer, and I am grabbing one of my butcher knives.
I have some 8 inch knives wrapped and taped in cardboard, so that I can tuck one into my waistband.
Then I am going to get my .45, and then I am going to fight like my life depended on it.
It is going to be bloody, and one of us is probably going to die: me or the burglar.

Not fighting isn't even an option, it is off my list;not fighting aids my attacker, in a passive way. And fighting energetically limits the attackers opportunities.

1. I carry everywhere around the house, and then the pistol goes under my pillow at bedtime, bedroom is at end of hall, 2nd floor.
2. First floor has glass break and motion alarms, connected to phone and audible alarm. All windows have aluminum framed storms with strong glass, all doors are solid wood with metal storm doors outside. The alarm and/or the sound of smashing wood or glass should wake me up.
3. pick up gun
4. flip bedside switch which turns on hall light
5. call 911
6. get wife and I behind bed looking through bedroom door down hallway, gun in hands resting on bed sighting down hallway. Stay connected with 911 and wait.
7. If BG(s) reaches top of steps and turns toward us even after hearing alarm, hearing us call 911, seeing light come on, being able to see gun pointed down hallway, he means us harm and gets full magazine at that moment. Reload.
8. We wait in place for police whether we fired or not, keeping 911 aware of the situation.
