I just came into a couple of thousand pieces of Extreme 147gr 9mm platted bullets. My old go to range fodder recipe for lead 147's was 3.3 gr of W231 but seems a little anemic with these bullets. ( Slide on my S&W 1911 pro runs in slow motion w 15# spring. :-)
I'm going to kick up the W231 a couple of tenths for a try but if I'm back to experimenting ...... I figure I would would ask what works for you in this bullet weight. Looking for a mild shooting range load. I have Red dot, W231,Tightgroup, Bullseye, Clays and Unique to work with but can pick up a # of anything if it's worth while.

p.s. I have access to several books and the powder sights so I'm good with the do's , don't s and limits. Just looking for proven /pet loads.

I have read and heard that Winchester Super Field is THE Premier powder for the 9mm using 147 gr bullets . Supposedly provides the most velocity for the least pressure . Accuracy has always supposedly been stellar and yes , it burns very clean, for those asking .
I use a lot of WSF , but in revolvers . When Unique got scarce I switched to WSF and never looked back . Good Luck

When running chrono for matches, the minimum MV to pass for 147gr is 851fps for PF 125.
Most competitors load near 130 PF and check that actual bullet weight (sample) is 147gr to assure passing chrono. Titegroup and WIN231 are most popular, but the others you listed (except Unique) are commonly used.
I'd recommend you just bump up your W231 load until you get PF 130 and call it good if it makes round holes in a paper target at 50yds. Some barrels need more speed than others to stabilize 147gr 9mm.

I have used the fast burning Bullseye all the way to the slow burning HS-6 powder.

My loads went from a low of 707 fps up to a maximum of 975 fps
in my short barrel 9mm with a 3.5" barrel.

835 fps was the sweet spot for this bullet and this pistol with a med. fast powder.

It shot better groups than the 135 gr plated, so stay with the 147 gr and good shooting.

in our IDPA club just about everyone who shoots 9mm uses 3.2 grains of Titegroup with that bullet .

Acc #7

Acc #7 is a very good powder for heavy 9mm bullets. It was recommended to me here for light loads, and it worked like a champ, but there's no reason it wouldn't be just as good at higher velocities. It seems to make a 'push' recoil' rather than a 'snap' and were they were the most accurate combination I've ever gotten out of a semi.

Reloading and experimenting go hand in hand.Try to step up your load by 1/10gr up and watch what it'l do.That's the funpart of reloading;we always expect for the best with that new load!Anyway'that's what I'd try before switching to another powder since 231 is pretty good for 9mm.

4.0 grains of WSF works magic with these bullets. Be very careful to crimp only enough to remove the flare for seating.

Thanks Gents, I get the experimenting thing. It's 3/4 of the fun. Just loking for some leads on something new to experiment with. I have some 3.2 gr tightgroup loads and some 3.5gr W231 loads ready for testing. We'll see if that scratch's my itch.

I haven't loaded any of the X-treme 147's, but I did try a few hundred of the Hornady 147 JHP. I used 5.0-5.5 grains of Blue Dot and they functioned everything great and seemed to be pretty accurate. I don't remember the exact powder load, but it was in the range above. Another plus is that bullet setback is pretty much impossible as that is a compressed load.

My early load testing is predicated on accuracy. I screen mid-range powder charges, lock on the one or two top contenders for accuracy, then break out the chronograph and creep up on the velocity.

In that manner, I arrived at 4.0 grains of Hodgdon CFE and Winchester Autocomp for the Xtreme 147 plated. Both loads are stellar in my 4" and 3" Rugers.

I use 3.2 grains of VhitaVhouri N320 with my 147s. OAL is 1.165. They make 130 pf from my S&W Model 929. Groups are 1" at 25 yards from a firm rest.
