Police Trade-in 640s at Centerfire

Lucky Eddie

I helped my friend who doesn't have a computer order 2 S&W 640s last Friday. They showed up at our FFL today. The problem is they were 2 model 10's that were pretty rough. So he did not except them and called me crying.
By the time he showed up at my house he was worried they would not take them back or they would be out of the 640's. We called and talked to nice young lady in customer service. They had discovered the mistake the same day they shipped. They already had shipped replacements. Now the reason we call him Lucky Eddie: the Rep told me they were sold out when they discovered the mistake and she had to take 2 from their display case to send LUCKY EDDIE.
Im expecting the one I ordered tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be crying when I compare mine to his cherry picked two.

Got mine today. A few dings on the top strap. Cleaned up a little and
used Rem Oil after cleaning the insides.
A little Mothers on some of it and removed the white paint that was on the front sight.
Changed the grips. Action and timing were right on. DA seems better
then most DAO S&W's I have tried. Look's like it was carried a lot and shot little.

My S&W 640-1 arrived. The condition looks just like Glashaus' revolver. It is clean inside and out. Overall I am pleased and feel that I got a good deal from Centerfire Systems.

The only difference from Glashaus' is the stamped lettering and S&W logo appear to be faint and lighter than they should be. My revolver may have buffed up in the past. Have any of you received one that may have been re-finished?

I installed an Apex spring and firing pin kit for an improved DA trigger pull. A pair of Altamont combat super rosewood checkered grips are on order. I can't wait to shoot it this weekend.

Great looking guns, fellas!! Glad you are happy too. Glashaus, you lucky dog!! hahaha Finally got mine all cleaned-up and even the black goo broke-down overnight and wiped right off this afternoon. Yuck! Had a rough time getting it back together.....shot the cylinder lock spring across the garage. Dah. Found it after quite some time! Gun is reassembled with the new 360J grips on it and seems to function fine. I'm not used to a hidden hammer so don't know just how to check for a tight lock-up. But, it seems okay. Got all the lead out of the barrel and chambers too. Sure like the feel of this early gun compared to the new stuff they are putting out. I sure can feel the difference!!! This is solid. I plan to try a couple different methods to clean-up the finish, probably using a couple different Scotchbrite Pads and some Mothers if it looks too brushed. I hate to go to the mirror finish unless I have no choice. This is fun!

Do you think the XS front sight I had just put on my 360J would fit this J-frame too?

Checking for lockup is easy, as you pull the trigger you should be able to see the lock fall into place, on the bottom of the cylinder, and not be able to turn the cylinder BEFORE you hear the hammer fall. Do this with each chamber to make sure.

Kieslers, a police distributor, had 1000 of these in stock for several months. I just got my weekly email from them and they are now down to 489. So I guess dealers have caught wind and started purchasing them.

What are they asking for them?

I think we all owe JohnRippert a big thanks for starting this thread and alerting us to these cool guns!!

Anyway, John, thanks from me. I have been having a great time watching as everyone gets their guns, and hearing the excitement over not just a good deal, but getting an older, solid Smith without the dreaded IL, and having fun rehabbing and cleaning them up. This is just the kind of gun that I like too, not too new, not beat up, don't have to worry about maintaining the finish, powerful, compact, and a great bargain!!

And thanks to everyone who has shared their treasures as well!!!

Best Regards, Les

More than what centerfire is selling them for. I think Kieslers has them advertised for 399 retail on their website. Dealer price is a tiny bit less than that. I can only assume purchasing several hundred revolvers may net you a nice discount. I was shocked when I saw Centerfire's pricing on these. They are a steal. Any FFL should still be able to snag one from Kieslers as they still had plenty in stock based on the last email I saw.

Mine came today, picked it up at lunch. Great shape with a bit of character. Much better trigger than my current 640-1, but the ejector rod is a bit sticky so the innards are probably gummy too. I'll pop the side plate after dinner, it's going to get a good cleaning.

Then too decide on grips.

I'm real happy with the score !

No carbon rings, but the yoke screw is pretty buggered up, I think the face got cleaned regularly on a buffer.

Rings on the blast shield.

I think you have to be LEO, first responder or military to purchase from Kieslers anyway.
I put 1 in my cart, hit checkout, and it say's request a quote. Will not go to checkout unless you have Department info.
Was not going to buy one anyway, wanted to see what the final price would be.
Tried 3 times.

I am sure someone would have posted about them. I am glad to have been a proper enabler. This has definitely been my most prolific post.:D

Mine arrived this afternoon and I am pleased with the one that I got. It has a few shallow scratches and typical handling marks which one would expect. it isn't perfect but it is a nice example. Clean up was quick. Just a few passes with a solvent soaked brush and clean patch and the barrel and cylinder were shiny and clean. I pulled the side plate and was surprised to find it clean and well lubed. The previous owner was either a gun guy or was tight with the armorer. I may replace the grips later but they are OK though showing some wear. Good weather here , close to 80, so.I will test it tomorrow at the range.

Picked mine up from my FFl today and was pleasantly surprised. Thanks again to the OP I made sure not to miss out after they were out of stock after the 1st go around. Too good of a deal!

Removed the well used Uncle Mikes grip for my $5 Gun Show Special Pachmyr Compacs. No major gouges or scratches so i just did a quick wipe down with a micro-fiber. Almost too nice to do anything more than open it up and clean up the insides if needed.

Now should I even polish it up or leave it as is? And I will be adding an XS standard dot front sight and maybe an Apex spring kit I had saved for my m360. But again the trigger pull is already just about as smooth as my 327pc.. I guess a decision can only be made after getting some rounds thru it. Can't wait for range day!

Yeah I forgot to mention that in my post. I have an FFL and I'm on their weekly e-mail inventory list. They don't charge a CC fee or anything just shipping, which is reasonable.
