S&W 5946 "New Old Stock" at Cabela's?

An alternate theory is that as LEO agency contracts expire and they transition to new firearms, S&W has some incomplete frames that they are building into saleable firearms.

There are very few departments that are buying new 3rd Gen guns. :( It's been mentioned before that S&W will only make new 3rd Gens if an agency insists and the alternative is losing the contract. WVSP and CHP come to mind.

The good news, is that they are going to have to provide warranty support for these guns going forward. Which means that some parts are likely to be available for the foreseeable future.

Yes, and from what I have heard, part of S&W warranty support is not only maintaining parts inventory, but some complete pistols as well, in case some have to be replaced under warranty.

I can report that as recently as first week of November, Cabela's near me had a NOS 5946 in the case, absolutely brand new fresh with not a mark on it. SN on right side of pistol, "Houlton, Maine" emblazoned on the left side of the slide (obviously not at all where 99.8% of all 1-2-3rd Gens were manufactured...) and a price tag that said, GULP, $799.

To be honest...
$799 is probably near where S&W would price them if they, like everyone constantly says & wishes, they would start up production again. And let's be honest... they aren't going to sell at that price.

Honestly, that price wouldn't stop me from buying a new Third Gen. I see guys snapping up $1000 SIGs all the time, and I have a CZ SP01 that was $600+. Despite being a big CZ fan, I'd find another $100-$200 for a new S&W. I just wish these guns were anything other than standard 5946s - If I'm going to spend that kind of money I'd much rather have a DAO gun with a rail for nightstand use. If they were 5906s, I could live with the lack of rail since they're fine range guns.

Also, the Hamburg PA Cabelas had a new 5946 in the case for the same price ($799) when I visited in mid December. I wonder if its still there after Christmas.

Picked up a NOS 3953TSW a couple months back. Dated 2013 and serial number on right side, 3mags, brand new, test fire cartridge etc.

The one I purchased from Gander Mt. was in its used case the gun is really in new condition, came in a cardboard box numbered to the gun ,had its manual ,its lock & test fired casing in a sealed envelope dated 2014, 1-ten round mag , did talk with Smith & was told the pistol was a special run item for a police agency but did not know for what agency , so how Gander ended up with them is a mystery, mine was made in Houlton also in 2014. So its nice to know Smith still make a current 3rd Gen handgun, which means they must still carry parts . Hope this adds to this topic

Did you order off line? I got one coming for $369.14. I'm hoping I didn't miss the train on this one. I guess I will find out on the 11th or 12th.

Does anyone know when the $599.00 price ends? The ad says one magazine but most people on here are reporting three included. My store according to the website does not have one but I can order one and have free shipping to the store. Do you know if you are locked in to buy if ordered? Thank You, Brian

You might be out the shipping but you don't have to accept any firearm you decide you don't want...

Went to Cabela's today...they had them, the one I looked at was marked Springfield, MA...it had three mags and Trijicon 2014 marked night sights and the guy at the counter said they are brand new (old stock)...and no one there gives them a second glance 'cuz they aren't plastic...

I did notice the frame markings are different than I am used to from Smith and appeared like the Maine pistols...

At the store I saw them at it was marked "clearance" and the counter guy did not know when the sale ended (it IS a clearance) and said he thought there were a few in the back and he could get me a new, boxed one from there if I wanted...

They must have picked up a ton of these! They seem to be spread all across the country. I just handled one in the new gun shelf - everything as described above. 14 sights, three mags, etc. Tag said $599 price is good until 1/18/17.

The trigger felt very nice for a DAO. The downside, unless you're already stocked, would be finding a sizable pile of factory mags.

Still thinking on it....a few days left...

So I got my S&W 5946 from Gander Mt today and it is a Houlton ME gun made in 2014. No night sights, original box, and only 1 15rd mag. Gun is in barely used shape. The outside looks as if they threw a bunch together in a box. Yet for 369.14 can't beat the price. I was able to save 30 bucks with the code GMT5. If your on the fence go online and get one before they are gone.

That sounds like an incredible deal, enjoy your new 3rd gen S&W.

Well I just ordered one. Used code JAN25, saved $25.00.
My total is a little less for some reason. $363.72 which includes $349.99 for gun, $13.73 tax and $25.00 2nd day air shipping.
The ad I saw said 1 ten round mag not 15. Guess I'll find out next week.

EDIT: That JAN25 code = free shipping. Fantastic deal.

My state tax is 7%. I think as long as you live in a free state you'll get a 15 rounder. I mean even if you were to get (which I doubt) an older 5946 the price we're paying is far below what they would go for on GB.

I have noticed some differences between the 2014 and the one I have from 1992. Aside from those already mentioned is the ejection port on the 2014. It has some more rounded edges and near the ejector it is rounded out further, maybe to help with a more consistent ejection.

Yeah I'm in the most free in the Union, Missouri by God.
I'm sure I will get a 15 round mag. But I have quite a few Mec Gar mags for my 915. I think they will work?

Edit: Just checked that other site...one $795.99 the other one $749.00.
Yes sir, heck of a good deal we got.

The mags should work just fine. I have around 20 factory mags myself for my 5900 series and 6900 series if I decide to get back into a 6906 again. I have read Mec-Gar makes most factory mags for the big firearm manufacturers.

That was my thinking going to Gander to pick it up especially it being the 13th. I figured if it was below my expectations I can at least get rid of it for 400 no problem, but was happy when he opened the box and I saw the Houlton ME on the slide. I think the guy behind the counter was shocked at my knowledge of 3rd gen smiths especially for someone who is only 30.

I will call S&W Monday to see if they can give me a manufacture date and product code. I've had good luck when calling on any S&W for the info I want.

Semper I......... well you know the rest.

I was looking at the ad after I ordered the 5946, and Gander has a killer deal on other 3rd gens too... 6946 for $299.99. If I hadn't bought the S&W 640, I'd jump on that 6946 in a heartbeat.
