Today Is National Puppy Day! Let's See Yours - Then and Now!

The one on the top bench is a "Native American shepherd" which is a fancy way of saying mutt with German and Belgian shepherd, husky, malamute and chinook.

You know, the more I looked at this photograph with your "Native American Shepherd", the more something kept nagging at the back of my mind.

Then today, I finally remembered.

There actually is a breed known as the "Native American Indian Dog". You can read about the breed here. Your dog's coat looks very similar in length and texture to me. But the Native American Indian Dog's face, with its longer muzzle, looks a bit more wolf-like than your dog...but still, the similarity is quite striking.

Just picked up this little girl (Nancy) on Sunday to help keep me company; after my loss of Zoey last December (post 46)

She is just tooooo cute anoblefox! I can't believe those long ears are standing up so proudly on a young pup like Nancy! Kira's ears were much like Nancy's when she was a young one, but she grew into them (post 92). :D

What breed (or mix) is she? She looks like she has quite a bit of Shepard in her to me, but I have trouble telling pure Shepards when young.

You are correct. The Native American Indian dog (NAID) was started in the 90s as a designer breed originating from German and Belgian shepherd, husky, malamute and chinook. The Native American shepherd then takes the NAID breed and adds a bit more shepherd back in for increased trainability. She may be a mutt, but my wife and I love her dearly!

This is Bandit our 10 year old rescue dog. Part Papillon and mostly Jack Russell terrier...He gets along with most other critters unless they run – then they are a target!

That's quite a combination of breeds! He looks like he could really focus on his intended prey. I'd hate to be a squirrel or chipmunk and have him get after me.

Week 2 (10 weeks old)

Loves the truck and growing like a weed.

Old Tennessee boy (probably 90 or older) saw the dog and said it had coonhound in it. Hmmmm... old home grown Tennessee boys usually know their hounds. I guess we'll see cuz yesterday a DNA test mysteriously arrived in the mail-- Wisdom Panel 3.0 Canine DNA Test. The wife didn't say anything about it... she knows what I'd say. Wonder how much this will cost me?

Well... Shasta (she unofficially goes by Coondog and answers to it. Wife hates the name so that makes it perfect. :D ) turned out to be real easy to housetrain. She's smart... maybe even a little too smart.

At close to 12 weeks and growing like a weed, she's more than a handful to keep occupied and bores easily. Hasn't finished her shots yet and not supposed let her around other dogs to tangle with at the park... so keeping that energy in-check has been a bit of struggle. Then I remembered "tactical". 20 minutes chasing a green laser around took the puppy energy right out of her! In the office snoozing at daddy's feet... she's zonked out... :)

Well, we all know that dogs love trucks, no doubt about it.

Shasta is marked like a Black and Tan Coonhound, but her ears aren't shaped like a Black and Tan's. She doesn't have "hound ears". They should be more droopy and rounded at the bottom...Shasta's are triangular shaped like a Rottweiler's or a Doberman's. Plus, the top of a Black and Tan's skull is more rounded than Shasta's is right now.

Keep in mind, also (I may have already mentioned this somewhere), she's also marked similarly to Rottweilers, Dobermans, and one of the coat variations of Dachshunds.

She will grow into a beautiful adult dog, no doubt in my mind, but it's way too early in her life to be figuring out what she'll look like in a year. It'll be interesting, I think, to see if she barks or bays when she's older and trees a possum.

My last 2 dogs (both rescues) Bobbi on the left, we lost her last May, Sebastian on the right, lost him in 2006. They were both 12 years old, so pretty much at their full lifespan. Haven't decided what to do yet. I don't think the wife or I are up to 100+ lb dogs who need daily brushing so we are debating the options. We're leaning toward a Schnauzer. (Standard or Toy, not Giant because that would be like putting the fork in the light socket for the third time)

Wife mailed the dog's cheek swab DNA test a few days ago. We should know the ingredients of Heinz 57 in a couple weeks. Cost me $80 .

DNA test for dogs? Really? First world problems... sigh...
