Dean Martin

I grew up in an area of West Virginia with a large Italian-American population. Dean Martin was very popular here, and his songs were played often on the local radio when I was a kid. I always liked him as an actor and singer as well. His version of "Volari", with English lyrics mixed in with the original Italian was always popular on the air:

"Volare"

Volare, oh oh
Cantare, oh oh oh oh
Let's fly way up to the clouds
Away from the maddening crowds
We can sing in the glow of a star that I know of
Where lovers enjoy peace of mind
Let us leave the confusion and all disillusion behind
Just like birds of a feather, a rainbow together we'll find

Volare, oh oh
E contare, oh oh oh oh
No wonder my happy heart sings
Your love has given me wings

Mentre il mondo pian piano spariva lontano laggiu
Una musica dolce suonava soltanto per me

Volare, oh oh
E cantare, oh oh oh oh
No wonder my happy heart sings
Your love has given me wings
Nel blu, dipinto di blu
Felice di stare lassu

I still have many of his songs especially Christmas songs on my iPad.

By the way, Dino was an honorary member of my college fraternity, Alpha Phi Delta (I'm Beta Tau, '72).

Happy Birthday Dino!!! And As the Italians say: "Cent' Anni"!!!

Best Regards, Les

I don't know how many of you remember a movie Dean was in called Texas Across The River but there was a scene of a drunken Indian riding his horse into a tree branch and getting knocked off. I suspect that early "Political Correctness" caused it's removal because while I saw it in the original release of the movie it is absent from all subsequent releases.

Since I was apparently born a curmudgeon, I never really liked the slap stick stupidness of Lewis although I always liked Hope and Crosby

Of all the Rat Pack he was the one, IMHO, with the deepest and broadest talent coupled with humility. By all accounts, of his groups, he was the one with the biggest name recognition that was the easiest to deal with in real life. Lewis on the other hand.......the idea that Lewis could out sing Martin, when Martin had a better voice than Sinatra (GASP) is just evidence of Lewis's delusions of adequacy.

Happy 100th Dino!

I gather he was someone who didn't take himself very seriously. Also I read his drunk act was just an act until his son-an Air National Guard pilot-died in a crash.

I've seen that Jerry Lewis has been hospitalized for a urinary tract infection the last two days in Las Vegas . He's 91. I was thinking he was older.

I Have an Opinion

I have heard Dean sing live in his solo LV Show. I have heard Jerry sing live in his solo LV show. IMHO, Jerry was the better singer. I heard him sing pop and semi-classical. He was a superb singer. ...... And a superb comedic actor. .....

I just saw on True Crime TV that Dean Martin and Traci Lords are from the same home town, for whatever that's worth. At least you can admit to your wife that you're a Dean Martin fan!

Don't forget Jimmy The Greek Snyder. He, too, was from Steubenville.

The Man was dripping with Talent from Singer to Actor He could do it all.

How many performers had a number one song (Everybody Loves Somebody), an Emmy nominated (multiple times) TV show, and an Oscar nominated movie (Airport) in which he starred? Not too many others I think. The man was incredibly talented.

According to his daughter in his obituary.......he gave up alcohol and cigarettes on a bet in the sixties and never touched either again.

I wish Dean Martin and John Wayne had made more movies together. I never miss Rio Bravo or The Sons on Kate Elder when I see them listed. Wasn't Dino in The War Wagon, or am I thinking of someone else? They don't make 'em like that anymore. Movies or men.
