Are you a good shot?

I shoot a lot and think I'm a fare shot. Can anyone here split a playing card on edge at 10 yards. You should be standing and open sights.
Daniel I believe it is spelled "fair" in the usage above. And yes I CAN split a playing card on edge at 10 yards standing and using open sights.

I just don't want to right now.

how come so many of you say you can't shoot as well as you used to?
i think you guys are slacking off.
i work hard every week at getting better n usually, i do.

ge isn't the problem. it's lack of practice.

Well, Susie, lack of practice is one of the factors, and my eyesight is still pretty good, but the physical deterioration that goes along with my almost 84 years has wrecked havoc with my group size. I sure don't shoot as well as I did when I was 24.

I admit to sometimes showing off at the range

At 63 and cataract surgery 10 years ago ( great distance vision/ cheaters required) I've been searching for a good solution to FFSC; "fuzzy front sight condition "..... a chronic old fart's fact of life.

I have shooting glasses w/ a bi-focal in the right lens; good for static shooting , but not for things like IDPA.

As I posted earlier in the thread; I was "point shooting" my new to me M&P9 at 7/8yds earlier in the week.........fast double taps, 31 rounds/ no sights......... Qualifying scoring (10,9,8s=5) I shot a 152 out of 155. ...... in the "good old days" w/ front sight it would have been a one hole group the size of my fist....... all 10s

for all you with vision problems, shoot 10,000 practice rounds point shooting. you will then be able to beat rast's challange . out to 15 yards, no problem.
plus, if your hands shake, when you learn to fire as soon as the gun points, there is no shaking.
you can do this with 22lr. the skill carries over to big calibers fast.
this is doable, guys. just because you are in your 80s is no reason to be defeatist.
rule:
WHEN YOUR BODY LETS YOU DOWN, OVERCOME IT WITH YOUR MIND.

Do my challenge out to 15 yards while point shooting? I would love to see that.

Never seen the movie "Outlaw Josey Wales" ???....... about 10 minutes in.......... fence post scene..................

LOL

even in my best decade..... I'd need to see the front sight to do the RC out to 15.....................

k, rast. what size group are you looking for at 15 yards, from the hip?

See the link on post #65....... not hard at those ranges and no time limit; but not point shooting from the hip either........ about fist size IIRC

but I have to agree with you 10,000 rounds of practice....... will make you a better shooter.

Edit....... target is 2x3"......12 shots 3-10 yds. aimed, no time limit

well, at 15 yards, using sights would for sure be under 2''.
i shoot bulls eye at 25 n 50.
i doubt i can do fist size from the hip at 15.
what i know is i wouldn't miss a torso target at 15, draw n fire in a half second or so.
i was serious about over 10,000 practice rounds, but fist size would take luck.

The challenge is simple:
4 shots from 3 yards
6 shots from 5 yards
6 shots from 7 yards
4 shots from 10 yards

That's 20 shots. No time pressure. To succeed, they must all be inside the orange part of the attached target. Can't even cut the line.

You said you could do it from the hip, no sights. However, if you want to use your sites, I'm good with that too. Heck, I'd be happy just to see a target at 15 yards that's under 2".

I don't know where you live, but I'd love to go to the range with you.

I look forward to a picture of your target.

Oh yeah, if you don't want to print out the attached target, you can just use a B-27 target. The orange part is the same size as the X ring on a B-27.

My shooting buddy, Stinky, calls me Mr. Magoo...can't argue with him. Had RK surgery about 20 years ago, went from 20/400 in the right eye, 20/600 in the left eye to about 20/30 between the two or so. But it's starting to fade, so glasses are in my future...sheesh, being legally blind as a kid and no one noticed, not even my teachers in elementary school. When you are a kid, you think that the way you see is the way everyone does. Guess that's why I was into books, not sports. So nice these days to be able to see the display on your clock radio a foot away when before...I couldn't. But if I misplaced my glasses....my co-workers called them coke bottles. Kept a pair for the memories...

I've never tried the card shot. But all the talk about aging and losing eyesight hits home for me, and I'm 42. I kinda took a hiatus from shooting for three years, I used to spend a fair bit of time at the range. I could hit a golf ball consistently with my CZ 452 (.22 lr) at 100 yds with irons.

I took my new to me Colt Sporter to the range a couple weeks ago and could barely see a 3" black circle on paper at that distance. Didn't hit it.

Yesterday my 16 yr old son was shooting the same Colt and I was using my 10.5" XM clone. I got tired of him asking me "Are you even using the sights?"

I was even wearing the glasses I got this past winter. Its depressing, I used to be able to read a road sign if it was in sight.

I feel your pain. I used to be able to read the Sunday comics from across the room. Actually, I can still do that. What I can't do is read them if they're right in front of me. Dang presbyopia!

Suzie is correct, the red dot can help with the sights.

As much as I hate to admit it, I've also gone to magnified optics on my rifles. That's the price of aging I guess.

I consider myself a fair to 'midland' shot and several years ago I was making some pretty good shots off hand with a .58 Cal Zouave muzzleloader. One of the guys in the group said 'If you can take an egg off that fencepost out there (it was a T post about 60+ yards out) I'll NEVER question your ability again or say it's luck! - so he sets the egg on it, I carefully load and before firing I say - Ok how about I place the bullet on the bottom between the egg and post and and the group starts laughing and saying no way! I take aim, fire and the egg explodes and a guy walks out to the post and looks at it and the others are saying 'well what do you see?' He walks back and says there is 'lead residue and a small dent on the top of the post'
