Bought a Manurhin revolver today, updates!

Yes, Michael Zeleny is very knowledgeable. In fact, I bought both of my MR's from him.

If he lives in L.A. I believe I spoke with him yesterday, got his contact info via Facebook and gave him a call looking for o.g. grips but he didn't know where to find them. Eventually I contacted Adam.s armory online and he directed me to the Hastings website, definitely not easy to find parts for these guns very few people know where to look and even fewer sell them. The next pics I post will be with the wood grips on it.

Btw I am always impressed by the wealth of knowledge and help I find here. Thanks all!

Was lucky to find a 4" with target sights at Allens Armory years ago. Had it reblued to take it back to the way it looked new. Nice guns, shoot great. Yours is the best fighting revolver out there. Being about the same size as the model 19 makes it easy to conseal. Enjoy your MR73 and head to the range to give us a report. Wood grips come up for the gun on eBay, there were 2 sets recently. Due to the fact that the pistol has import marks referring to century arms on the barrel, I doubt the story about the French pilot is true. More than likely it was part of an imported lot of Manurhin revolvers that were surplus police? Once I pick up the revolver I will look up the serial number and see if it's possible to find date of mfg. maybe that will help piece together its history.

Your assumption is almost certainly correct. Century Arms' modus operandi has been for decades to purchase large batches of surplus foreign service weapons and import (or re-import) them to the US civilian market.

Their business model has been built on the fact that most other countries, due to restrictions on private gun rights, have no profitable market for their own no longer needed issue guns, and are willing to give them cheaply to someone offering to take them off their hands.

So Century has always been a volume buyer and generally wouldn't deal in private used guns, making your MR 73 most likely a former service gun and part of a batch buy.

If it was it didn't look to be abused, it was in pretty good shape, but I'll examine it more closely when I pick it up and post some pics.

Updates to original post above as well as new pics of internals.

The new grips look great on the gun. It looks more concealable now. What did the grips set you back? Any range report yet? Larry

The grips weren't cheap $150 plus almost $20 in shipping. Yes, that is more than I would normally pay, my default is ahrends...but there is only one importer of the original Manurhin grips I could find in the U.S. and I was lucky to find any at all. I will say that they are very good quality, but they had better be for the price.

I apologize for the delay in the range report but it is coming. I had to reload more .357 this weekend as I was out (I rarely buy factory ammo anymore) and it was too hot to reload in my garage, so I ended up spending the weekend moving my reloading bench into the spare room lol. That turned into a trip to harbor freight for a grinding stand to mount my turret press on and then Goodwill to find a cabinet to store my stuff in.

By the time I got it all set up I only had enough time to reload one box of ammo and it was too late to head out, the range I use is about an hour drive.

To make a short story long, my goal is to get out this weekend and will post details as soon as I get back.

It's a shame that S&W or Colt grips don't match close enough to modify and look nice on the Manurhin. Someone on eBay had a few sets that I think he made. Not bad looking. I would like a nice set of grips on mine with some figure. The 3" guns look good and your new grips set it off nicely. What distance will you shoot it at? Have fun, Larry

I own a MR-73 and the Trausch Rubber stocks I purchased from Hastings were pristine and NIB. Unfortunately Mr. Trausch died a few years back and his Company is no longer in buiness.

Also the F1/MR-88 stocks will not fit the MR-73.

Hastings still has some for sale I think.

I had an MR73, new production, but I sold it after marking it up quite a bit. I ordered another one, 5 1/4 barrel, etc, that is due in within a few months. It was ordered about a year ago. The company that is making them only produces about 400 per year.

I decided to have my Manurhin restored and refinished/blued. When I get it back I will be sure to share before and after photos. If anyone else has any experience with these revolvers feel free to share it along with some pics.
