DID THE SINGLE STACK 9MM KILL THE CARRY REVOLVER?

For you semi lovers:

John, which stock is that on the 1993 Model 640? ^^

Those are Herrett's "Shooting Star" stocks. They were handmade to a tracing of my hand back when I had one of the first Model 60s. Probably the most comfortable J frame stocks I have. The 640 is also equipped with a "clip grip" for pocket carry.

Last year. It wasn't a rebate, just a sale on certain J frames. I don't know which or how many but I picked up a new 642 for $300

maybe this year the R8:D carry it like hutch.

This has been an interesting thread. There is some good knowledge shared also. Thanks to all for sharing. Both revolvers and autos have their advantages and disadvantages. If I were a policeman or a soldier I would be making sure my SIG was handy. If I was headed some where sketchy and couldn't take a long gun then I would do the same thing. But for just getting through my life these days my M649 sure seems like a great compromise.

For me it has not. After almost 20 years of being required one iteration of semi-auto or another my EDC is now typically a Model 36 no dash with a Tyler grip adapter, a speed loader, and/or a speed strip. It may not be the perfect tool for the job, but it is adequate and I prefer wheel guns. If you look at the number of compact revolvers available on the market I would say that compact single stack 9mm pistols aren't killing off the revolver yet.

I regularly carry a Model 36 no dash (1971) with speed loaders even though I have an M&P Shield in 9mm. Mostly because I shoot the little J frame accurately and I love Revolvers

Nachogrande: If you ever find a S&W revolver with a 6 lb DA trigger pull I will be amazed if it goes boom at the end of the stroke.

I was a cop for 33 years and arrested felons with revolvers and autos. I always appreciated the respect shown to revolvers and autos when the end of the barrel was 44 or larger.

I've arrested people with snubnoses at 35 yards plus and was thankful that I had some usable sights on the weapon when confronting the suspect who had just shot up his exgirlfriends house with her rifle. Fortnately for me he left it at the scene! Sights are always nice beyond bad breath range. In my 70s now and a small auto is easier to manipulate quickly than a small revolver. Hope it's not the same for you but glad to have the option.

Kthorn, I appreciate your experience. I came of age with revolvers and 1911's, so the use of the 1911 safety is second nature. Now, I have a variety of wheelguns and autos, but my carry rotation is limited to a few that I trust completely, like my Model 10 snub, a Ruger SP 101, a 1911 and lately, a Shield 45. For basically, the same reasons as you.

Sold my Sig P938 and bought a Model 60 Pro Series. Partly because I never really warmed up to Condition One carry in the SAO Sig. But I really like the size of the J-Frame and 357 for carry and 38 for the range.

I can't make myself carry a 1911-format gun in Condition 1 either. It's either a revolver or DA/SA for me.

Bought a Glock 47 two weeks ago. For defensive carry, yes, this is a superior platform to a J Frame, but not better for defensive carry than say my 586 L-Comp. The 47 is certainly an easier carry.

But for defensive or EDC, my service Glock (Model 35) is better than my 627 UDR, and my Wilson Combat EDC X9 is better than my 586 L-Comp. So unless in the woods, I've pretty much set revolvers down for now. There is a TRR8 with light on my nightstand.

I would say the generic answer in this S&W revolver forum would be "NO"!! The single stack 9mm auto will NEVER take the place of the defensive carry revolver.

Now for reality... In my very revolver friendly world the single stack auto has won.

I generally carry a mid-sized semi auto as my EDC, however when I leave the house and want to carry lightweight it is no longer one of my small revolvers. It is likely a single stack 9mm GLOCK 43 carried AIWB (gasp, he said GLOCK!).

My J-frame revolvers get carried around the compound, the larger frames go with me on hunting trips, and they all make it to the range.

EDC for me is now an auto.

I carry this most of the time I'm not running around in uniform with a 4 inch 686-6 on my hip and a 642-2 in my pocket. I would love a modern (no lock) Model "312" chambered in .38 +P or even .357 Mag. Until then, this rides my belt with the 642-2 in my pocket or on my ankle. (I HATE ankle holsters!)

36 Flat Lach ? Very nice. I love the Flat Lach guns.

Right now the single stack 9mms are the "in thing" for concealed carry, it wasn't that long ago that .380s were all the rage, and .40s/.45s before that. All it will take is some publicized instance where a 9mm doesn't work or some new wonder gun to shift the status quo to something else, be it back to the .40 or something else.. The revolver may be long in the tooth but it hasn't gone away, if it was truly dead why would Colt come out with the Cobra or Kimber the K6s?

I pocket carry a 442 the vast majority of the time because it's convenient and doesn't really require me to dress around the gun, I can't do that with a shield or a G43, and I trust a .38+p more than a .380.. I do have a g26 for my adventures into the more interesting parts of town but I don't carry it all that often

Personally I think the revolver is the safest and most dependable handgun ever made even to this present day.
I do believe hand weapons in the lines of a handgun will someday make all present handguns totally obsolete. I think like in the movies they will be a form of the ray guns. There probably will no longer be a need for reloading ammo because ammo of today will be like the old dial telephones, a thing of the past.

I typically carry my MP 40c iwb. Just picked up a 638 for those days when carrying the 40c wont work. I like the 638. I also have a 19-2 4 inch but do not carry that or my 1911.
