cook county soda is TAX FREE

Some years ago, I resigned from a very good job because they were going to transfer me to Chicago. I have never regretted doing it.

My current employer knows that anything the company needs me to do in California is on TDY terms only.

To be fair there are a bunch of other states on the "not living there" list, some because of their gun politics, but more because of their climate.:D

Less than two months after the country's largest soda tax went into effect, embattled lawmakers in Cook County, Ill. — the home of Chicago — have decided to repeal it. The tax has been plagued, in its very short life, by legal challenges, implementation glitches and a screeching, multimillion-dollar media battle between the soda industry and public health groups. On Tuesday, in recognition of growing public pressure, the Cook County Board of Commissioners voted 15-1 to roll back the tax

The roll back doesn't take effect until December 1st.

This wasn't just a soda tax, it was a "sweetened beverage" tax. It included soda, both regular and diet, energy drinks, sports drinks, lemonade, tea or coffee, etc. And yes, Bloomberg pushed it hard, running several commercials daily touting "it's for the children".
I'm SO glad I don't live in that cesspool county. It's just a shame it's dragging down the rest of the state.

first of all it isn't "soda" it's"coke". Now there's different flavors of coke depending on what you like; fer instance there's 7 up, RC Cola, Pepsi, Orange drink, red drink, Barqs and so forth.

Got it???[/QUOTE]

Git It!!!

Yep! Upon arriving in Ohio from Florida in '66, dad stopped at a gas station/store to fill up. He asked the clerk for 6 cokes. He bought out 6 Cokes.

Dad looked at him and said: "uhh, uhh, I want 2 grape, 2 orange and 2 root beers".

We had crossed the Mason-Dixon language line.

I grew up in Chicago and moved out to the suburbs when I got married. Unfortunately I still live in Crook County. When this tax went into affect we started buying our "sweetened beverages" outside of Crook County.

The real issue in Illinois is the horrendous unfunded pension obligations the state has. No soda pop tax is going to fix that. We can thank the Chicago Democrats for that, they promised everything to everyone but now there isn't any money available to cover the cost. The State should declare bankruptcy, try and get out from under these pension obligations and start over. That would be a cr*ppy deal for the people collecting these pensions but I don't see an alternative. Unfortunately the Democrats in power would NEVER allow that to happen.

I'm wondering if Crook County maybe was named during a period in history when people were more honest about things? Or is it actually Cook County?

Technically it is known as Cook County, TG. Reasoned people call it Crook County now.

Boy, do I recall those old Coke machines. Talk about refreshing on a hot day! The heavy glass bottles (yes, young folk..GLASS!) had rough etched rings from repeated use that made for a perfect grip on condensation covered glass. They tasted so much better. :)

As a kid, all I needed to crack those chest Coke machines was a straw and a church key.

Somehow I KNEW you had a dark side to ya. :D:D:p Sadly, we did the same thing a coupla times-then they learned to lock the doors. This all happened around 40 years ago-so--I'm sin-free.:D
