James Bowie gave his life at the Alamo fighting for Texas independence 182 years ago this week. The Alamo fell on March 6th, 1836.

Ironically, until the most recent state legislative session Texans were specifically prohibited from carrying a "Bowie" knife anywhere off their property... the term "Bowie" was used in the law.

This lovely Damascus Bowie style knife was a Christmas preent from my wife. I cannot find any maker's mark. Think I'll strap it on and walk around in front of the Alamo...

Home brewed Bowie

Here is my only, "Bowie" knife, a "Coffin Bowie". I made it, many years ago from a high carbon steel, knife blank, that I purchased from a Store, in Ohio, that catered to black powder enthusiasts. I used ebony for the scales, bronze for the hilt, and 3/16" brass welding rod, for the scale, and hilt pins. I built the display stand, of Sycamore wood, the sheath from 5/32" cow hide, and, hand sewed it with, waxed cotton lacing twine. I wanted a "home brewed" look. The knife is 3/16" thick, X 1 11/16" wide, X 11 5/8" long. It might be a little short to suit Bowie, but, it might make him grin, a little. I hope so.

Bowies

I am a fan of Bowie’s, here are three of mine.
First one is a Bagwell gambler, middle is a Cold Steel Laredo and the one on the right is a Bagwell Fortress ( my favorite).
I teach edged weapons for law enforcement, defense and applications. I routinely carry one of the big blades under a polo shirt or sweat shirt, simply to make a point, when teaching these classes. I have custom made kydex IWB sheaths for all of these.
These Bowie’s are razor sharp and serious cutting tools. As a fighting knife they are a fearsome weapon.
I put my 6” 28 in the photo for scale.

A Kiwi made Bowie knife

I bought this Damascus steel Bowie from, IIRC, Wellington NZ where it had been locally made to include in my CAS costume. I have never had it sharpened, although I suppose I should one day. But the thought of making that steel with sharpening marks gives me the shivers when I think about it.

Bowie Knife's... I love 'em!! Alway's wanted one but could never find one that was quite what I wanted..

Until I saw Rambo III.....

It's supposed to be a modified Bowie design I believe but I fell in love with the looks and after I actually handled the knife I said I gotta git one!!! :D

I bought the knife to use and I have which explains the scratches and such on it. Great to use out in the woods hunting and handy on a fishing trip and at work also!!

One of the Best knife's I ever bought!! ;)

The folder is a Camillus CUDA MAXX 5.5...the other knife is a Ka-Bar first edition Navy SEAL knife that has a 5.5" blade... The folder is big but so slim it fits in a pocket or IWB...

..also the knife on the left is a Cold Steel Perfect Balance Thrower...very old 1950s design that CS started making again. It is also a great chopper and can be used as camp knife for spliiting kindling and food prep...for $20 it is hard to beat.
