The stunning beauty of vintage SW stocks

We're all aware of the spectacular wood from Roper, Culina, and others, but I gotta say I'm really drawn to the natural look of the older walnut and GA stocks from S&W. I literally stole these N frame targets off EBay and after a little lovin, I could stare at them all evening. I wanna see some of your vintage FACTORY stocks please!

Can you describe the "little lovin"? How did you get them that clean and polished?

I like to buy'm off of ebay when I can get them at a great price. Not usually easy but deals will pop up. As long as the checkering is still sharp, and they're not refinished, I'll give them a look. Received this pair here yesterday. $81 on ebay. A few days of TLC and they'll likely go on a '75 28-2 that's in 96% or so. The nice fitting magna's on it aren't original.

Wipe em down with a cleaning rag - maybe slightly damp if needed. Then the "magic" part is applying a coat or two of Renaissance Wax. Apply lightly with your finger, wait a couple minutes then wipe down with a micro fiber cloth. Protects and gives them a nice satin finish.

I've posted these many times and though they aren't original anymore, they show the handiwork of forum member Gatorbaiter who fixed them up for me. I was told here these butchered four dollar grips are, or were cokes. They looked like those cut down K frames I got at the same time minus all the chips. They are now perfect compact mini cokes on this short 27-2.

I remember seeing a pair like these in the Smith & Wesson Company store.
They were silver plated and in a presentation box.

Don, when I bought these in '98 at SHOT Show from the manufacturer (SADDLEWORTH) they were also offering them in silver... solid silver... $$$. These solid brass ones were even higher $ than what I wanted to spend at the time. -Bill

bit of a hi-jack....................love those grips...make me :D

I've got some cut down k-frame targets from the 80s I'll have to try on my 3" 66s............ proportions should be about the same!!!!

?

I realize those grips are not wood, but are beautiful. I did not know S&W made anything like them, and would like to know more about them. As an "Old Poop", of 86, I learn something new every day. That would not be possible, if the great folks like you didn't share their treasures with us. Thanks. I appreciate it.

A couple of bairgain N frame smooth targets

I don't know what kind of wood these are. I found one set (the lighter one) at a tent sale at my LGS. They were in a big Tupperware tote, marked $25. The darker stocks were on a pawn shop, shooter-.grade 4" Model 66, that I picked up for $400. Both sets of stocks really fit my hand, and they make my 29-10 look like a a 29-2 or -3 (except for that lock thingy).

Smith & Wesson didn't make them, they were made by SADDLEWORTH.

Great looking grips.

Wyatt Burp;
I would like to complement you, and Gatorbaiter, on rescuing those "butchered Cokes", from the scrap box, and turning them into a great looking, and unique pair of grips. You can both, take pride in them. They add more beauty, to the, all ready beautiful 27-2. You are tempting me to create a shortened pair of grips like them, as I don't like grips that are too long, and have shortened grips to suit my taste, also. Thanks for sharing them with us.

I asked this question, quite some time ago, and never got an answer. I'll try again. I don't know if there is no answer, or if no one cares to answer. Please answer if you can. Thanks.

K-frame presentation grips with "football" cut-out Mid-60s to 1980???? ...........IIRC saw some on the Texas Ranger commemorative.

i have several pair of K-frame targets that I've shortened (in the 80s) by 3/8"; I like the proportions butt to grip better..... also loses a lot of unnecessary balk IMHO!
