Original S&W 686 Combat Grips

Im still learning about this classic 686-2 I recently bought. People have commented "wow, those are original K frame combat grips from back in the day... "

The grips have silver medallions, and what looks like a heavy silver circle backing inside. Also, inside they are numbered -matching "934"...

Can anyone tell me about these grips? Are these the "original" combat grips? what are they worth? -Not selling. Just curious honestly.

Those are Smith and Wesson factory square butt combat grips

They were offered as an accessory for a decade or more and could be put on any square butt revolver.

One size was manufactured for K and L frames and a second size for the N-frame

Depending on frame size, wood type and condition square butt combat grips can go for $150-$300

Yours appear to be made from Goncalco Alves wood while the ones shown in the package are Morado wood

They look very nice but were probably replacements for the ones that came originally on the gun, another stock style called Target - much more blocky and usually with plainer Goncalo Alves wood. Enjoy!

I was "thinking" of glossing them up with tru-oil ? But now, considering what Im learning here Im thinking I'd better keep them stock (?)

and forgetting about tru-oil, and you recommend a natural oil that will enhance and preserve the wood?

They seem to be in gorgeous shape.

(and yes, the gun came with original "target" grips also)

They have usually a fairly thick shiny coating (lacquer or varnish?) on them so the oil may not do much. Perhaps a nice coat of wax to start.

Furniture polish works good...

K frame SQ Combats in excellent condition are worth $200 all day long.

A coat or two of wax is what I'd recommend also.

a quick spray of Pledge Furniture Polish Wax and they're looking brilliant! Yet not too glossy that they slide around when you grip.
