Most weird, or unusual handgun holster

I have always been partial to the Bianchi James Bondesque shoulder holster. They made it in brown and black (for formal wear). I was lucky enough to find this in a gun show a couple of years ago.

I remember the Model 14 well but not a black one ever .





Retention was suspect on these and the lowermost image shows how we added a snap button (the cap of a snap fastener) inside to add a 'bump' to catch inside the Walther's trigger guard. The vinyl lacing at the 'dee' was all we could think of to close up the leather around it, a style called a 'mexican' pattern. Later John combined the clip with an early design I showed John that used polyurethane tubing as a retainer, to patent the holster that Rogers then had to sophisticate considerably for production by Safariland.

I'll see if I have a pic of that one, from Safari's catalogue (I know it appeared in John's 2010 book, for example).

If memory serves (and it might not), this holster was in the catalog with a picture of John wearing a tuxedo with the jacket slung over one shoulder and him leaning over (maybe with an elbow resting on one knee) and I could have sworn it was in black. Maybe the shoulder strap was black also. At my age I could just be remembering what I thought I saw. Not sure.....just sayin'.

When was it a good idea to expose the trigger of the handgun while in a holster?

When men carried revolvers. Old school shooting techniques with double action revolvers including starting the trigger pull as the gun came out of the holster. Some of us still use holsters like that.

Pachmayr Contour Fit Holster with Model 681 in it. This is tough to draw from due to the grip of the neoprene. It's even tough with the Model 65-1 below.


Here is the Pachmayr Contour Fit compared to the Bianchi 5BHL which fits the Model 65-1.

I figure the Pachmayr holster will get some use if I have to go out to help folks in a flood. Anyone have any idea how to make the inside of the holster slicker?

Sure, all production (suede lined) Bianchi holsters were sprayed inside with liquid silicone. Will work well with Pachmayr's material and should be inert and do no harm, either.

Few know about the Pachmayr. And good for you for spotting what it was a copy of .

And how about this -- Buck Knives had a go at it, too, with copies of Bianchi products:

Red, what is it stamped on the snap on the Buck holster? Does it read Buck? That's an oddball, a new one to me, I'm going to have to keep a lookout for.

I have two in black - one for a K frame and one nominally for a 1911.

The 1911 holster has the strap cut for hammer down carry, a downer (pun intended) and actually fits a S&W 4506 better than it fits a Colt.

The K frame holster always seemed like a decent holster for rough conditions, but both reside in the big holster box.

Some surely wonder why I speak out so much against copying popular designs; but you can see here that Buck copied history (the old 5B) which was quickly supplanted by the 5BH (as copied by Pachmayr). Bianchi customers always wanted to know 'what's new'. Marketing 101 teaches us that people 'buy the differences'; if it's not different in other ways, then they will only pay a substantially lower price. That's hard on profitability unless one is the low-cost producer; that's done by having product made in Mexico of US materials (Bianchi, Safariland, one source says Galco; so lower labor cost) or by making it from a non-leather material (Uncle Mike's, so both lower labor cost and lower material cost including cutting economy).

I wish I had a picture of it but I only saw this holster twice and both times I was riding past in a Grab (uber) car.

Two Indonesian police officers in Jakarta last month had a revolver in a holster and the holster had individual rounds in loops on the outside of the holster itself.

In the late 1980s Massad Ayoob and Ted Blocker Custom Holsters came up with a novel Holster System for IWB carry. It used a Leather Belt with Velcro Pile sown on the under side of the belt. And a nicely made Holster with a leather tab covered with Velcro hook. The contention was that the Velcro tab and Velcro Pile Belt would hold the IWB Holster in the proper position. I bought this LFI 4506 Holster for my S&W 645 and Matching Belt from Massad Ayoob at a gun show. I liked it a lot but how many times do you carry a full size 45 Auto IWB? I used the belt with pile outside under my Police Duty Belt which had Velcro hook covering the under side to hold it to my pants belt with Velcro pile outside.

I found this (lethal force institute) LFI3906 holster by Ted Blocker in a used holster box just this week. Since it fits my favorite carry pistol (S&W3913) I will be trying this system again. My Ted Blocker Belt has lost the Velcro Pile long ago.
