S&W 4006TSW California Highway Patrol (CHP) Information

S&W will not service gen 3 guns. Your on your own. But they are high quality guns. Should last a life time...

As collecting vintage Smiths continues to increase in popularity, you will see gunsmiths specialize in repairing and restoring these. These are simple and easy to maintain firearms, you can replace all the parts yourself and there are a number of step-by-step YouTube videos. The parts right now are still available from Numrich and similar outfits as well as parts from Ebay and Gunbroker. What I expect to see soon are people offering full restoration of unloved vintage Smith automatics. You can get a rode-hard and put up wet Smith on the dirt cheap. The trick is getting the right lacquer for the alloy frames and deciding to use crushed walnut shell grit blasting media or baking soda blasting media to restore the stainless models satiny finish.

I'm not sure how true this is. They still offer the 3rd generation action job , where they basically do a trigger job, check everything for function, and change out the springs. They just refinished another user's 6906. It may be more accurate to say that they do limited service, because they probably don't have the big expensive spare parts (i.e. barrels, slides, etc...) anymore, but they don't seem to have totally abandoned them either.

I am seriously thinking of purchasing one of these from Summit. To the folks that bought one from Mark what is your opinion of these as far as condition? Does Smith & Wesson still service these?

I purchased one from Summit and was pleased with what I received for $385. Mark was great to work with, and I later purchased another 3rd gen from him. I'd say the CHP model is in very good condition, but that's my opinion. I'll post a pic later.

Well it came in today from Summit and it is very nice. The grips show a little wear as does the gun but not much. I'm leaving her as she is, as she was carried. I do wonder what year it was made and how many were made in total. Does anyone know.

The serial number is CHP3192 if anyone has a clue I would appreciate it.

Yep, I can call S&W and ask but it's more fun here.

Does anyone know a way to make the "Tactical" and other markings darker.
I believe it was done with a laser? I have used nail polish many times to restore chipped or missing markings but these look awfully shallow.

Yup, still offer service. Might be limited, but still offer it through their Performance Center

Just got my 4006 from Summit Gun Broker over the weekend. It was in very good shape. It's CHP6494

I have no idea other then to bead blast it and redo it. For me that is the first thing that's gotta go. I never did like the laser etched art work. If holstered enough it will rub off and fade over time.

And the wait is over. Not much use at all but the etching still needs to go.

I don't think I ever showed you guys this. Bought back my original issue and changed it up a bit.
Trigger job (did it myself)
Warren sights
Oversized mag release
Removed the mag safety
Melonite slide and slide stop - I hated the TSW billboard.

Looks great. Maybe buy another one and hope for poor etching :)
I have grown over time to despise the TSW billboard artwork as well. :o Yes, I still own a handful of TSW pistols with the artwork in various shades of brightness vs. fading, but give me the plain Jane roll-markings or even the simple laser markings every time! :)

A while back when one of my blind-ordered TSW's arrived very unevenly faded, I tried to get a local company to restore the artwork... but they could not do it. It would have to go back to the mothership they said. Later, I inquired about it with S&W CS and they said they can still do the artwork restore, but only with a slide refinish. No way I could justify the cost. :o

I guess I am "that guy" who thinks the enhancements in the TSW pistols are not worth having to put up with the billboard advertising artwork. Call me old fashioned I guess. Rails don't really do it for me either (especially the black mustache rails) so between those two "improvements" I can live without any more TSW's in the armory.

30 seconds with the proper bead blast and the black etching is gone plus it leaves a nice new finish.

BTW The trigger on the one I got today is as good as a lot of my revolvers.

In case anyone is looking. These factory 11 round mags from CDNN are great. Way better then the ones that came with the gun.

I too purchased one from Mark after talking on the phone with him. Very friendly. I bought a mint condition non-railed 4006 a couple of months ago and fell in love with it, so I thought I'd buy a shooter.

I bought mine last march from summit, mark was a great guy to deal with. The gun was in great shape, it's the only "semi custom" gun i've ever owned, and at $385 couldnt go wrong.
