Big bore snubbies

Some impressive specimens and collections here.

I have three:

Nice Snubbies. That Alaskan BackPacker and it's side plate with the etched Grizzly Bear and Pacific Fir trees... I love that sideplate etching!

I have a "Mountain BackPacker", M629-5 that has/had a Grizzly Bear, crawling over a boulder and maybe Sequoia trees in the background laser etched into the sideplate that was 95% of the way polished off at the factory for some LAME reason! The only two "MBP" owners that I know of other than mine say their Mountain Back Packers exhibit the exact same laser etching(s)... with the Grizzly Bear and Trees, polished off at the factory and only visible with a bright light too. Your "Alaskan BackPacker" with it's sideplate made me go get the 300 Lumens StreamLight flashlight and have both the wifey and daughter confirm the Grizzly, Boulder, and Trees... (I decided to take the "MBP" with us on vacation to Florida for our trip because stainless steel handles this humidity so much better than a blued finish!) Anyways, I wished Smith would have left the original etching in tact just like yours without having to go outside in the sunlight or a high powered flash light to see it. I really like your "ABP" and it's side-plate etching!

Pic of polished off Grizzly, etc..

ETA: If anyone has any info as to why Smith took to the trouble of grinding/polishing off the side-plate etchings off of the M629-5 "Mountain BackPacker" model I'd love to know more about it. I believe Smith only made 500 of these designated Revolvers so it's been really hard to even know another person that actually has one! My "MBP" has the serial number "MBP02XX" etched into the underside of the top strap... A feature/marking area that is usually reserved only for PC guns I've been told! The trigger in DA has been really stellar from day one... SA the trigger is something to write home about so maybe it did go thru the hands of the PC... Thanks in advance!

That is a great "Work-Horse" carry gun for sure... I love it!

I also love those Underwood .44Special loads topped with 200grain Gold Dots you use. Our M629-5 is stoked with the same loads on the nightstand last night!

Great thread !
I'm a fan of collecting big bore snubbies myself.

Just going thru this thread again while the steaks soak up the Dale's and beer for marinade as the girls are out shopping...

Darn nice Revolvers you have there! I don't know which one I like best.... much like my collection of Snubbies in .38Special and .44Spec/Mag...

Lew Horton 629 with Hogue grips, Magnaporting, and lanyard provision.

Nice looking piece! What dash is this model as I've yet to see one with provisions for a Lanyard???

I ask because Only my CZ's have Lanyards which I find perfect for The Great Outdoors... and will only carry them when Boating or Kayaking with a Lanyard-Line attached to a belt when doing so for fear of the gun going overboard especially when Kayak fishing.

Well, it's not a Smith & Wesson, (although they did copy it) and I'm not quite sure if it qualifies as a snubby with a 3" Barrel, but it's most certainly big bore, so...

This is my Taurus Judge Magnum with Altamont Super Rosewood grips. I got it for my birthday a couple years ago after I handled my brother's Judge and liked it. I was considering getting a Governor over it, but the price difference coupled with the fact that the Governor doesn't come chambered for 3" Shells ultimately made me choose the Judge.

You made up for just having (1) by having a "hellofa" only big bore for sure! Tell me more about those grips! Are they "Eagle" branded or styled grips? I'm pretty sure I've seen that profile before that caught my eye and Eagle is the style or something similar. Again, nice carry companion!

Those are Ahrends concealment finger-groove stocks. I usually get them on eBay.

mine came with these tiny laser grips. makes it look a lot smaller, better concealable but I wouldn't want to use them in a range session. Too small for my taste

My Judge actually came with the stock "Ribber" grips, the Altamont grips were aftermarket, although their were a couple special edition models that came with Altamont grips as well.

I've never attempted to conceal it either, but then again I bought it as a nightstand gun. If I wanted to concealed carry it then I would have opted for the Public Defender model or the Governor.

I've got to say though, the Governor is really nice-looking. I'd love to get one someday.

A Charter Arms Bulldog here. I have often wondered why the big bore snubby never caught on, and why the big bore revolver went out of fashion.
