Do recent events alter your perspective?

I was in a Walmart about 4 years ago and a customer was wearing a camo t shirt and olive drab pants with a pistol on a thigh holster over the pants. It was flopping around when he walked. Then all of the sudden two police officers hurry over and a Walmart employee pointed them towards the guy. I asked the employee what the trouble was. She told me they just call the police every time they see an open carrier. It caused a scene.

It was my personal opinion that they were all being idiots.

That man was doing no good to win over more people to support the 2A. He was just scaring soccer moms. I think he just wanted attention. He should be inviting people to the range and showing them how fun target practice is. Nothing macho about it, it's just fun.

Then you have Walmart "Just calling to police out if someone is open carrying". What a scene and waste of resources. At the time it was just stupid. If it would have happened yesterday, after the tragedy happened, I sort of would have gotten it. I wouldn't have blamed Walmart employees for being scared after looking at this guy.

CC, not an issue. Maybe clean cut with open carry on the belt, no big deal.

Now I can see why they have an employee carry your gun out, and walk you out of Walmart when you buy a gun there.
I'm ok with that. I'm seriously thinking of buying a single shot 20 gauge from WM.

Something most OC people don't get, everyone doesn't like guns. So in todays enviro of mass shootings, yeah it makes some people nervous. THen of course there are the 2A ideologues that say OC is legal so I am toting my Ar into the Wally. Really?
IMO, no one has a need to tote a long gun into any public space, legal or not. If it happens in my space, that person becomes a potential target, time & distance. I have no issue profiling either, so if the guy OC a pistol looks sketchy, he also becomes a potential target. Doesn't mean I am running out the door or reporting him, but that person is getting extra attention. Unfortunately many gun owners are not really smart. It is their right to be stupid, but when bad things happen, don't get upset.

Can't fix stupid...........
In Pa. open carry is legal except in Philadelphia County/city..... not really an issue in rural areas....but IMO discretion is the better part of valor.....

I got my concealed carry permit over 40 years ago (right out of Law School) so I could carry concealed as I roamed around in Penn's Woods........ over the next decade I carried more and more in the urban areas where I lived and practiced.

Stay out of NC, OC is common here.

The followup headline may ultimately read "Armed off-duty firefighter faces assault and unlawful detention charges for pointing gun at man engaged in lawful activity . . ."

Guy walks into a Wal-Mart carrying a rifle and filming himself on his cell phone? Ticks an awful lot of boxes. Maybe time to duck out through the auto service center and call the professionals.

And it's not just guns to be concerned with...

Garden Grove stabbing and robbery spree in Orange County, California: Suspect identified as Zachary Castaneda - CBS News

Mass killing in Garden Grove, CA...4 killed, 2 wounded, by a perpetrator armed with a knife.

Several years ago I attended a seminar taught by Marc MacYoung, who went into detail about how dangerous a knife ambush can be.
Yeah just down the road from me. Though ambush, no, he boldly walked into places & started in on people. He wasn't sneaking around in broad daylight. Head on a swivel. Not many ccw in Kalif, but a large majority of the states permits are issued in Orange County where this occurred.

These tragedies are forcing me to examine why the Second Amendment must be a fundamental right. There are SO many moving pieces to this issue, it's hard to isolate them all.

I know what the end result will be, should the 2A be repealed. It's a road we DON'T want to go down.

The anti-2A forces have it easy. They simply wait for a bad actor to come along, then proclaim how bad guns are and how their only purpose is to kill, etc. Riding the emotional tsunami they glean more and more functionally uneducated disciples into their ranks.

The media plays it for all it's worth - That's low-hangin' fruit, guaranteed advertiser dollars. The more grisly the better. I honestly can't say whether the "media" is as anti 2A as we claim they are. I KNOW they worship the bottom line,

Meanwhile, firearms related sports are losing popularity. Hunting is withering away.

So, I'm not going to engage the "what if I" scenarios.

I'm much more interested in how to preserve the Second Amendment and therefore our Republic.

My apologies. When I mentioned knife ambush I was speaking generally, not about this specific case.

The incident in Garden Grove, CA with the knife attack stretched into over 2 hours before the police caught the guy. Knife attacks are sudden, close and quiet, at least a fire arm makes a noise. Even a CC has little warning for a defensive action. An OPC, perhaps even less since he is a visible, identifiable target.

The copy cats are on the prowl....

Who's the next dunsel to do an act of domestic terrorism ???

It can happen anywhere, anytime, anyplace. Be careful out there folks.

The pie faced 20 year old in Springfield MO. now faces felony charges for his stunt,
wither he did it for the shock value or some twisted political statement,
it was the wrong time in the current climate of recent events.

From USA Today,

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A man has been charged with a felony for allegedly walking through a Missouri Walmart store with a body armor and a loaded rifle.

Dmitriy N. Andreychenko, 20, of Springfield was charged Friday with making a terrorist threat in the second-degree. That's a felony punishable by up to four years in prison. He is being held in the Greene County Jail.

Andreychenko allegedly said he was testing whether Walmart "honored the Second Amendment."

Police say Andreychenko went to the Walmart on Republic Road in Springfield, donned body armor and walked inside with a loaded "tactical rifle" and another gun.

Police say panic ensued and shoppers went scurrying out of the building as Andreychenko allegedly walked around pushing a shopping cart and recording video on his phone.

The incident occurred five days after a gunman killed 22 and injured dozens more at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.

Andreychenko left the store after a few minutes and was held at gunpoint by an off-duty firefighter until officers arrived moments later, Lt. Mike Lucas, with the Springfield Police Department, said.

No shots were fired during the incident Thursday. Andreychenko was arrested after he was stopped by an armed off-duty firefighter, Springfield police said. No one was injured.

It’s legal in Missouri . . .

Don't care. Visible weapon (be it rifle, knife, axe, or sword), plus body armor, plus filming yourself in a public location? That equals nutjob, and I don't feel like being nearby.

Perfectly legal to talk to yourself on a subway platform. No, I will not stand next to you while you do so.

Like I said, there's people with the training, equipment, and backup to sort the situation, who collect a salary to do so. Let them handle it.
