I have a 5" barrel, 5-screw, post-War K-frame. The serial number is S 9144XX. I haven't been able to find a database, and extrapolating from reported guns has been difficult. I'm guessing the latter part of 1947, but would appreciate it if anyone could direct me to a data source or provide me with date information on an S-prefix with a serial number close to this one. Thanks.

S prefix only used 1946 to early 1948. If you need closer than that drop a C note for the letter.

If/When Jack (JP@AK) sees your post, he‘ll be able to get you fairly close; he is our specialist on the S-prefix M&P.

My less educated guess from slimmer data would be around July 1947.

Very likely shipped in June or July, 1947. I show a 5" example with a serial number close to yours. I have one in my collection (a 4") only about 500 numbers higher that shipped in July, 1947, to a PD in Ohio.

The first S prefix M&P was assembled in September, 1945. However, none shipped until February, 1946, and that was only one shipment to a police department. Postwar shipments began in earnest in March, 1946. Production of S prefix M&P revolvers ended in March, 1948. Approximately 180,000 were made.

I would be interested in adding your revolver to my extensive database, but would need the full serial number to do so. If you don't want to post it here, please send it to me via PM. I don't track ownership, so you needn't worry on that score.

Closest SN I have listed to yours is S913391 shipping in 6/47. It is a 2" snubby M&P. It's nearly impossible that yours didn't ship sometime in 1947.

Jack - Thanks! I'll PM you the serial number.

How about joining the SWCA? As a member you can directly query Roy Jinks and get the ship date at no cost. Many other benefits but this is one of the best.

Jeff - thanks. I'll check into this. I have several vintage S&Ws, and would like to polish my records on them. I do have one Jinks letter, but usually don't need the specific ship date and shipping location on them.

DWalt - thanks! - this dovetails nicely with the information from Jack.

Hi there. Hope you’re well. I’ve come across this thread as I have a closely related question, and you seem to have the intel I’m looking for. What would the approximate ship date be for an s prefix with SN S9850XX ? I’ll be happy to contribute to your database once I’ve got the pistol in hand (I’ve just purchased it)

Thanks in advance!

I show the range from S982000 to S986000 all shipping in March and April 1948. Yours probably left the factory in one of those two months. Later is always possible.
Thanks so much. If you’re still logging info on these I’m happy to share more once I receive it

Please do! Thanks.
Thanks. Will do. I’m very excited about this one, actually, as the gun is purportedly unfired, still showing the flaking (dried) lubricant it was shipped in.
