Rusty says this should be a day of national celebration and a federal holiday. Tomorrow too as a day of national hangover recovery and prayer. (“Lord if you let me live over this, I will never drink again.”).

My grandfather never noticed. Made wine and Grappa right on through it. I remember as a kid, when we put the still on the stove in the basement and lit all four burners, we'd talk while putting "covers" over the windows. I asked once: "Nonno, how come we don't cover the windows when we make 4 barrels of wine but we do when we make one barrel of Grappa?" His reply (he was a man who said maybe 10 words a day): "Government don't wanchu to be happy." I didn't understand for quite a few years. Joe

I could maybe understand drinking alcohol if it made you sharper or more physically able, but my observation is that it just makes people stupid and impaired. Why would anyone want that?

Well, I would disagree about the idiocy of our Constitution's amendments in general, but agree about the 19th being idiotic.:)

When you say we‘re still paying the price, are you referring to the development of organized crime in the US?
 
My grandfather was still offended by Prohibition 60 years after it ended. I can still hear him telling me it was a bad law snuck thru by underhanded busy bodies while the boys were off fighting the Great War. He didn’t really drink much, but he was seriously disgusted by Prohibition. He proudly told me how he was known as a gifted builder of stills. If someone bought the materials he would build them a still. He enjoyed building stills because it violated an unjust law. Grandpop also drove a beer truck for bootleggers on occasion. I loved his stories about the ‘20s, they made it sound like a lot of fun.
